Class directory

All Black Desert Online classes

Black Desert Online has 32 classes. If you are weighing up BDO classes as a new or returning player, that choice carries more weight than in most MMOs: classes are gender-locked, each comes with its own weapon set, and at level 56 every class splits into a second playstyle that can feel like a different class entirely.

This guide is for anyone starting Black Desert Online or coming back to it who wants to know what actually separates the classes, how Succession, Awakening and Ascension differ, and which one is worth starting on. It covers all 32.

LEVEL THE SPLIT UNLOCKS
  • 32 classes. The newest is the Agent, added to PC on 30 July 2026.
  • No holy trinity. BDO has no tank and no dedicated healer role — every class deals its own damage and survives on its own defensive skills. Shai is the one deliberate exception, the game’s only full support class.
  • Every class is gender-locked. Similar archetypes exist as separate male and female classes with different kits, not as a cosmetic toggle.
  • At level 56 every class gains a second playstyle. Succession enhances the weapon you already use; Awakening unlocks a new weapon and a new skill set. Six classes get Ascension or Talent instead, and have no Succession at all.
  • You can test any class for free before committing, at level 62, using a trial character.
The roster

How many classes does Black Desert Online have

Thirty-two, as of the Agent, which launched on PC globally on 30 July 2026 (Korea 29 July, console 6 August). Every class is gender-locked — the “male” and “female” versions of similar archetypes (Wizard/Witch, Musa/Maehwa, Ninja/Kunoichi, Striker/Mystic) are separate classes with different kits, not a cosmetic toggle.

How it plays

What actually separates one class from another

Classes in BDO do not follow the traditional tank, healer and damage-dealer roles that most MMOs are built around. There is no role to slot into and no group composition to satisfy — you are expected to handle everything yourself.

BDO runs on action combat: you aim manually, you chain combos by hand, and nothing is a tab-target rotation. Because of that, the differences between classes are less about a role on paper and more about four things — range, mobility, durability and crowd control.

The mechanical layer underneath is what separates a class that reads well on a tier list from one that works in your hands. Three defensive states matter most:

  • Super Armor — a 360° block that still lets damage through, but makes you immune to crowd control while it lasts. Grabs are the exception; they go through it.
  • Frontal Guard — blocks damage and debuffs in a roughly 90° cone in front of you. Anything hitting your back or sides lands normally.
  • Invincibility frames (i-frames) — usually attached to dash and roll skills, these avoid damage and crowd control outright, grabs included.

Which of those a class has, on which skills, and how long they last is the real difference between classes. Dash-heavy classes like Musa, Maehwa and Hashashin lean on i-frames to move through danger; heavy frontliners lean on Super Armor to walk into it. It also means personal skill and APM — how many actions you can execute per minute — carry more weight in BDO than in most MMOs, and that a class can feel completely different at two grind spots depending on whether the mobs interrupt you.

Shai is the one genuine outlier. She is the only full support class in the game: her Awakening summons instruments that buff allies and debuff enemies, and she carries real healing and party buffs — at the cost of reduced PvP damage and a smaller skill list than everyone else.

Those differences are what you feel minute to minute. On top of them sits one much larger change, and it arrives at level 56.

Specialisation

The level 56 split: Succession, Awakening, Ascension and Talent

In one sentence: Succession enhances the base weapon you already fight with, while Awakening unlocks an entirely new weapon and playstyle. That is the choice most classes face — but not all of them, and this is the part most class lists get wrong.

At level 56 every class unlocks a second way to play. It is not a subclass you level separately — it is a switch, and you can change back at a cost. What it is called depends on the class:

  • Awakening — a brand-new weapon with a brand-new skill set. Your pre-56 kit stays available and you swap between the two in combat. This is what 25 of the 32 classes get.
  • Succession — no new weapon. Instead your original kit is rebuilt with stronger versions of the skills you already know, plus new exclusive skills and passives.
  • Ascension — the official name for the second path on five classes: Archer, Scholar, Seraph, Wukong and Deadeye. These classes have no Succession at all.
  • Talent — the same idea again, used for exactly one class: Shai. Shai also has no Succession.

Agent is the exception worth knowing before you roll one: it launched with Succession playable, and its second path is scheduled for winter 2026.

Neither path is a beginner or veteran option — they are alternative playstyles, and which one is stronger swings with balance patches per class. The usual advice holds: try both on the same character before committing gear to one.

Getting started

Which class should a beginner pick

The developers’ own difficulty tiers

Character creation shows the developers’ own difficulty tiers — Control (how hard the class is to pilot) and Combo (how complex its chains are). The lowest-difficulty classes by those rankings are Wizard and Witch, Valkyrie, Berserker and Shai; Sorceress, Striker, Ninja, Kunoichi and Hashashin sit at the demanding end.

What players actually recommend

Guardian is the class most often recommended to newcomers in community polls, and Guardian and Berserker are widely called the most comfortable classes to grind on.

Why the decision is lower-stakes than it looks

  • Gear is account-wide, not class-locked. Your main-hand and awakening weapons are class-specific, but your armour, accessories and most of your progress carry across characters on the same family. Rerolling costs far less than in most MMOs.
  • HYPERBOOST (30 July 2026) is a permanent free gear track that takes a new account to 750 gear score at no cost — so a new character is not starting from nothing.

Test a class before you commit: trial characters

What a trial character gives you

You do not have to guess, and you do not have to level anything to find out how a class feels. Every account gets three trial character slots. A trial character is created at level 62 with every skill already available and roughly 4,000 skill points — far more than you need to max a build — and you can swap freely between Succession and Awakening and unlearn skills at will. Gear for them comes from the Haz NPC in the Battle Arena.

Where trial characters cannot go

Trial characters are limited to the Battle Arena, Arena of Arsha and Red Battlefield. That means no mobs and no grind spots — you are testing the class in PvP, not in PvE. It is still by far the fastest way to find out whether a class’s combo flow suits you before you spend real time on it, and it is the only way to feel Succession and Awakening back to back without paying to switch.

Patch reality

What to know before you commit

BDO is in the middle of the biggest overhaul in its history, and class balance moves with it. Two dates matter right now: the level cap rises to 70 on 13 August 2026 and to 75 on 8 October 2026, the latter with an EXP overhaul. Any class tier list written before those dates — including most of what ranks on Google — describes a different game.

FAQ

Black Desert Online class FAQ

How many classes does Black Desert Online have?

32, as of the Agent in July 2026. Every one is gender-locked, so similar archetypes exist as separate male and female classes with different kits — Wizard and Witch, Musa and Maehwa, Ninja and Kunoichi, Striker and Mystic.

What is the difference between Succession and Awakening?

Awakening gives you a second weapon with an entirely new skill set that you swap to in combat. Succession keeps your original weapon and rebuilds its skills into stronger versions with new additions. Both unlock at level 56.

Which classes do not have Succession?

Six. Archer, Scholar, Seraph, Wukong and Deadeye use Ascension instead, and Shai uses Talent. The Agent is a separate case: it has Succession, but its second path arrives in winter 2026.

Is there a healer or tank class in BDO?

There are no tanks and no dedicated healers in the trinity sense — every class deals its own damage and survives on its own defensive skills. The one exception is Shai, the game’s only full support class, who brings real party buffs and healing in exchange for reduced PvP damage.

Which class is best for beginners?

Guardian is the most common community recommendation. By the developers’ own difficulty tiers shown in character creation, Wizard and Witch, Valkyrie, Berserker and Shai rank lowest for control and combo complexity.

Can I try a class before committing to it?

Yes. Every account has three trial character slots. A trial character starts at level 62 with all skills unlocked and around 4,000 skill points, and can switch between Succession and Awakening freely — but it can only enter the Battle Arena, Arena of Arsha and Red Battlefield, so you are testing in PvP rather than at a grind spot.
