What is Guild Wars 2?

Guild Wars 2 is a buy-to-play online role-playing game — the massively multiplayer sequel in the Guild Wars franchise, built by ArenaNet and first released in 2012. The original game, Guild Wars, launched in 2005 with campaigns like Guild Wars Factions; Guild Wars 2 carries that world forward into the living, persistent Tyria you explore today. It is one of the longest-running MMORPGs around, and the rare video game where there is no subscription fee at all: the core game is free, and you only pay once, per expansion.

The world of Tyria

Guild Wars 2 is set in Tyria, the high-fantasy world the series has been building since 2005. You explore it as one of five playable races — human, charr, norn, asura or sylvari — each with its own homeland, from the kingdom of Kryta and the charr-held ruins of Ascalon to the frozen Shiverpeaks, the Maguuma jungles and the deserts beyond. Cantha, the eastern empire, reopened to players with End of Dragons.

Tyria is an open world built for exploration: dynamic events ripple across the maps, hearts and hidden points of interest reward wandering, and the story content runs from your personal story through the Living World seasons and into each expansion. Across Guild Wars 2’s life players faced the six Elder Dragons that once threatened the world — a saga that ended with the Deep Sea Dragon, Soo-Won, in End of Dragons — and the threats have kept evolving — most recently into the Kryptis and the secrets of the Wizard’s Court. The Mists, meanwhile, link Tyria to the battlegrounds of World vs World and the trials of the Fractals of the Mists.

Systems

How Guild Wars 2 plays

Guild Wars 2 levels you up through almost everything you do — defeating monsters, completing events, exploring and gathering resources all grant experience. Map completion is a loop of its own: clearing a zone’s waypoints, points of interest, vistas and hearts hands out experience, resources and crafting materials, and finishing the world map is a step toward legendary gear. The praised mount system, where each mount has its own movement mechanics, makes crossing and exploring those maps part of the fun.

Your build starts with weapons: the first five weapon skills are set by the weapon you equip, while you choose the other five — your heal, utilities and elite — from a larger pool, and each race adds its own racial skills on top. The nine professions split across three armor classes — light, medium and heavy — and an elite specialization from each expansion can reshape how a profession plays. Secrets of the Obscure layered in the Relic system, giving builds another customization slot.

Crafting runs deep, with eight core crafting disciplines from Weaponsmith to Chef. You gather resources out in the world and salvage gear you don’t need into materials, then turn them into armor, weapons, food and — eventually — legendary items.

FAQ

Guild Wars 2 questions, answered

Do you need a subscription to play?

No. Guild Wars 2 has no subscription fee. You create a free account, download the core game on the official client or through Steam, roll your first character, and play the bulk of the world at no cost. Expansions are one-time purchases that upgrade your account and unlock new content; an optional Gem Store sells cosmetics and convenience. For most new players the free core game is the whole on-ramp.

Is Guild Wars 2 worth it for a new player in 2026?

Yes — and the free core game makes it low-risk to try. A new player can level to 80 in the base game at no cost, and because progression is horizontal you are never hopelessly behind veterans on gear. The personal story and open world ease you in; you only buy expansions once you want the newer maps, masteries and elite specializations. For a new player, the free account is the whole on-ramp.

How does progression and combat work?

Progression is horizontal: you reach max level quickly, and from there new content widens what you can do rather than inflating raw power, so a returning player is never gear-locked out. The moment-to-moment gameplay is fast-paced and active — you dodge, chain abilities, and there is no rigid healer/tank/DPS trinity. Each profession can slot an elite specialization that unlocks new weapons, skills and a reworked profession mechanic, while masteries add account-wide abilities like gliding, mounts and more.

What are elite specializations in Guild Wars 2?

Elite specializations are expansion-unlocked variants of each profession. Slotting one grants a new weapon, a fresh set of skills and a reworked profession mechanic — turning a Necromancer into a Reaper or a Ranger into a Druid, for example. They are the main way build variety has grown since launch, and a big reason veteran players keep coming back for each expansion.

What are the game modes?

The open world is the heart of it: dynamic events where other players join in without forming a party, plus story content that runs through your personal story and the Living World seasons. Group content scales up through dungeons, fractals, raids and strikes for teams chasing rewards and achievements. Competitive play splits into structured PvP and World vs World, where three teams fight over objectives across large WvW maps. Hearts, quests and exploration knit the maps together, and you can team up with friends for any of it.

How does Guild Wars 2 fit into the Guild Wars franchise?

Guild Wars 2 is the sequel in the Guild Wars franchise, which began with the original Guild Wars in 2005 and its campaigns Factions and Nightfall. Guild Wars 2 launched in 2012, set about 250 years later in the same world of Tyria. ArenaNet announced a third game, Guild Wars 3, at Summer Game Fest 2026 and confirmed all three titles are supported in parallel — so Guild Wars 2 is not going anywhere.

What is in the latest expansion?

ArenaNet now ships a new expansion each year, with quarterly updates between drops. The latest, Visions of Eternity (October 2025), opens the region of Castora and adds a new elite specialization for every profession, three new masteries, fresh relics and six legendary rewards, with raid encounters and a new Convergence rolling out through 2026. The previous expansion, Janthir Wilds (2024), introduced account-wide Homesteads — player housing — alongside its new story and maps. We track each drop on this page.
