Guild Wars 2 Find Your Race
Match yourself to one of Guild Wars 2's five races — by your personality, or the profession you want to play. Race is cosmetic; pick the story.
Race in Guild Wars 2 is cosmetic — it sets your story and home city, not your power. So this picks the race whose story you'd actually want to live. Two paths: match a race to you, or to the class you want to play.
In Guild Wars 2, your race is a cosmetic and story choice. It sets your personal story, your home city, and a handful of rarely-used racial skills, but it has no effect on your power. Every race can play every profession at full strength, so the only real question is whose story and look you actually want to live with.
That is exactly what the quiz above sorts you into: one of the five playable races, matched either to your personality or to the profession you have already picked. This page explains how the five races differ, which races suit which professions thematically, and answers the questions people ask most before they roll a character.
The five races at a glance
Human
The classic high-fantasy race. Humans keep faith with the Six gods, hold tightly to tradition, and carry the long memory of a kingdom that lost most of its land to its enemies. They are resilient underdogs who refuse to give up. Home city: Divinity's Reach. Story themes: faith, loyalty, perseverance.
Charr
A feline, militaristic and industrial race. The charr are organised into war-legions, reject the gods on principle, and mastered gunpowder and heavy machinery long before anyone else in Tyria. Their loyalty runs to the warband, their found family. Home city: the Black Citadel. Story themes: war, iron, discipline, brotherhood.
Norn
Giant-blooded shapeshifters from the frozen north who can take the forms of bear, wolf, raven and snow leopard. They honour the Spirits of the Wild but live for personal glory, the hunt, and a legend worth retelling. Home city: Hoelbrak. Story themes: glory, freedom, the hunt.
Asura
Small, hyper-intelligent inventors who build golems and magitech and never doubt their own genius. To an asura, everything — magic included — is an experiment within the Eternal Alchemy. Home city: Rata Sum. Story themes: invention, ambition, intellect.
Sylvari
Plant-born and barely a generation old, the sylvari are curious, idealistic and chivalric, awake to a world they are seeing for the first time. They are guided by the Dream and their own conscience. Home city: the Grove. Story themes: curiosity, idealism, nature.
Which race fits which profession
Because race is purely thematic, the best race for a class is a roleplay decision, not a power decision — no pairing is stronger than another. Still, some combinations simply feel right, and these are the lore-flavoured fits the quiz leans toward on the "fit my class" path:
- Guardian — Human, Sylvari or Norn. Virtue, faith and a code.
- Warrior — Norn, Charr or Human. Raw martial prowess.
- Revenant — Sylvari, Human or Norn. The races closest to the Mists and old legends.
- Engineer — Charr, Asura or Human. The races that actually built the tech.
- Ranger — Norn, Sylvari or Human. The beast-bond and the wild.
- Thief — Human, Asura or Sylvari. Shadows, guile and sabotage.
- Elementalist — Asura, Sylvari or Human. The arcane as a birthright.
- Mesmer — Human, Sylvari or Asura. Courtly illusion and misdirection.
- Necromancer — Human, Asura or Charr. The darkest myths, or the boldest taboo-breakers.
None of this limits you. A charr guardian or an asura warrior is just as strong as any expected pairing — and often more memorable. Pick the fantasy you want to roleplay.
Frequently asked questions
Does race matter in Guild Wars 2?
Not for power. Race changes your personal story, your starting city, your body type and a few racial skills, but those skills are weak and rarely used in serious play. Any race performs identically on any profession, so race is a story and aesthetic decision.
Can any race be any class?
Yes. All five races can play all nine professions — Guardian, Warrior, Revenant, Engineer, Ranger, Thief, Elementalist, Mesmer and Necromancer — with no stat differences between them.
What's the best race for my class, then?
Whichever fantasy you most want to roleplay. For thematic flavour, Engineers feel at home as charr or asura, Warriors as norn or charr, and Guardians as humans or sylvari, but there is no wrong answer. The "fit my class" path in the quiz makes this choice for you based on the character you describe.
Can I change my race later?
No. Race is locked at character creation, and there is no race-change service. You can change your name and appearance with a makeover kit, but switching race means rolling a new character.
Which race has the best personal story?
It is subjective, but the charr and human storylines are commonly praised for their early-game writing, while the sylvari story ties most directly into the later Elder Dragon plot. All five are worth experiencing on an alt.
