What is Palworld?
Palworld is an open-world survival crafting game with creature collection, built and published by the Japanese studio Pocketpair. You explore the Palpagos Islands, survive the elements and craft your way up a tech tree, catching the mysterious creatures the game is built around.
Pals are those creatures. In short: Pals are mysterious creatures you catch with Pal Spheres, use in combat, and assign to various tasks. That last part is the twist that sets Palworld apart — Pals power base automation, working farming, building, mining and factory jobs while you are away, so creature collection and automation are really the same system.
It launched into early access in January 2024, sold millions of copies in its first days and drew constant comparisons to Nintendo's monster-taming franchise, then left early access for its 1.0 release on 10 July 2026 — a free update for everyone who already owned it. It is a one-time purchase with no subscription, and it is on Xbox Game Pass from day one. Its tone runs more satirical and mature than the games it gets compared to — Pals work the mines and factories with little regard for labor laws, and you carry guns as readily as Pal Spheres — and its Steam reception has stayed overwhelmingly positive across hundreds of thousands of reviews.
The world of Palpagos
The islands and biomes
Palworld is set on the Palpagos Islands, an open world you cross on foot, on mounts and — since 1.0 — through the air with the Wing Pack glider. Its regions run from starter grasslands and deserts to volcanic peaks, snowfields and underground dungeons, so dungeon exploration is a loop of its own. The 1.0 update roughly doubles the map: it opens the long-teased World Tree as the new endgame region and adds the Sky Islands floating above Palpagos.
Hazards and dangerous areas
The dangerous areas raise the stakes. Environmental hazards like heat, cold and poison stack on top of hostile wildlife, syndicate camps and Alpha bosses, and part of the adventure is learning to survive each biome before you push on.
Factions, story and crime
The islands are watched over by the Pal Genetic Research Unit and carved up by human factions — poachers, the Free Pal Alliance and the Brothers of the Eternal Pyre among them. The reworked 1.0 story sets a clearer course for your journey, from your first camp, through the towers, to the World Tree itself. Fire a gun at the wrong person and it counts as a crime — the Pal Defense Force treats you as wanted and comes to stop you, so danger is not only wildlife.
How Palworld plays
Survival and crafting loop
Palworld mixes survival mechanics with a deep crafting game. You gather resources, manage hunger, temperature and health, and climb a technology tree, unlocking a run of improvements that turn a first camp into an automated operation. It is the survival-crafting spine that the creature collection hangs on.
Combat and Pals
Combat is real-time and uses both guns and Pals. You fight alongside the creatures you catch, each with its own active and passive skills, element and combat role, and a Pal will come to your aid when a fight turns against you. Guns and Pal skills are meant to be used together, not one instead of the other.
Pal Spheres and new Pals
You catch Pals by wearing them down in battle and throwing Pal Spheres, then deploy them in combat or assign them to work. The 1.0 update added 72 new Pals tied to the World Tree and Sky Islands, bringing the roster to 287 — and because different Pals suit different jobs, catching widely is its own progression. Breeding lets you combine two Pals so the offspring inherit characteristics from both parents, and 1.0 layers Awakening and Mutation on top to push a favourite further.
Base automation with Pals
Your base is run by Pals: assign each one to a work suitability — kindling, watering, planting, mining, crafting, transporting — and they keep the farm and the production lines going while you are away. It gives the base a life of its own, so you can log real hours into a single settlement, then come back to stockpiles waiting for you.
Multiplayer and co-op
Everything scales into completely new multiplayer for 1.0 — multiplayer open-world survival at its core. Share a world with other players on dedicated servers, invite friends, team up on the Tower bosses and split the labour of a bigger base. Online play needs a broadband internet connection, and it is worth keeping some storage free, since the 1.0 download is large. The Wing Pack adds aerial movement and combat without giving up any of your five Pal party slots.
Palworld questions, answered
Is Palworld out of early access?
Yes. Palworld reached version 1.0 and left early access on 10 July 2026, more than two years after its January 2024 early-access launch. The 1.0 update is free for anyone who already owns the game and is the largest content drop in its history — the World Tree region, the Sky Islands, the Wing Pack glider, reworked breeding and 72 new Pals.
Is Palworld free to play?
No. Palworld is a one-time purchase — $29.99 at standard price — with no subscription, and the 1.0 update costs nothing if you already own the game. It is also on Xbox Game Pass, so a Game Pass membership lets you play it at no extra cost for as long as it stays in the catalogue.
What platforms is Palworld on?
Palworld is on PC (Steam and the Microsoft Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. It supports online co-op across dedicated servers, and it is available through Xbox Game Pass on both console and PC.
How many Pals are there in Palworld?
As of 1.0 there are 287 Pals. The update added 72 new ones tied to the World Tree and Sky Islands, along with fresh abilities and combat roles. You catch them with Pal Spheres, deploy them in combat and assign them to work at your base.
Is Palworld just Pokémon with guns?
That is the shorthand, but it undersells the mix. Palworld is as much a survival-crafting and base-building game as a monster collector: you manage hunger and temperature, build and automate bases with Pals as your workforce, and fight in real time with firearms as well as Pal skills. The catching loop is familiar; the survival, automation and open world around it are the actual game.
Is Palworld still in a lawsuit with Nintendo?
Yes, but it has not stopped the game. In September 2024 Nintendo and The Pokémon Company sued Pocketpair in the Tokyo District Court for patent infringement — not copyright — with Nintendo and The Pokémon Company each seeking about ¥5 million in damages. Pocketpair changed some mechanics during early access, and in November 2025 Nintendo narrowed its claim to older versions of the game. A technical briefing is scheduled for 1 October 2026 and the court's preliminary views for 9 November 2026; as of the 1.0 launch no verdict has been reached, no injunction has been granted, and Palworld remains on sale.
What's new in the Palworld 1.0 update?
The 1.0 update opens the World Tree endgame region and the Sky Islands, roughly doubling the map. It adds the Wing Pack for gliding and aerial combat, 72 new Pals, reworked breeding plus Awakening and Mutation, water-based building, and overhauls to the story, multiplayer and graphics. It is a free update for existing owners and the point where Palworld leaves early access.
