GW2 story order: expansions and Living World, without spoilers

The GW2 story order from the personal story through Living World and all six expansions, with current access rules and spoiler-light catch-up advice.

Read article

The recommended GW2 story order is chronological: personal story, Living World, then each expansion with the chapters released after it. Buying a bundle does not change that order. In particular, The Icebrood Saga comes before End of Dragons, even though its current access is bundled with that expansion.

This is a spoiler-light route through the campaigns, not a list of every achievement or a reason to rush to the latest map. If you are still learning your first character, use our GW2 beginner guide alongside it.

GW2 story order: personal story, Living World and expansions

  1. Personal story the base game campaign in Central Tyria, starting with your character’s own background and the conflict with the Elder Dragons.
  2. Living World Season 1 play the permanent version in the Story Journal after the core story.
  3. Living World Season 2 the bridge into the first expansion.
  4. Heart of Thorns the first expansion, set in the Maguuma Jungle; follow it with its Living World continuation.
  5. Living World Season 3 play this before Path of Fire.
  6. Path of Fire the second expansion, taking you to the Crystal Desert and Elona.
  7. Living World Season 4 the continuation after Path of Fire.
  8. The Icebrood Saga also called Living World Season 5; start with its prologue, Bound by Blood.
  9. End of Dragons the third expansion closes the Elder Dragon saga in Cantha. Continue through its post-launch story: What Lies Beneath, What Lies Within and Interlude: Forward.
  10. Secrets of the Obscure the Wizard’s Tower era; finish the expansion and its subsequent story updates before moving on.
  11. Janthir Wilds continue after Secrets of the Obscure, heading north to meet the lowland kodan and explore their homeland. Include the later story chapters.
  12. Visions of Eternity the latest expansion, on the island of Castora. Its concluding update, Code of Creation, released on 15 September 2026.

Your race and biography shape the opening of the personal story. Later, you choose an order: the Durmand Priory, Order of Whispers or Vigil. These are branches within the core campaign, not three extra campaigns to finish before Season 1. Follow your character’s path rather than trying to tick off every alternative.

That is the narrative route. You do not need to arrange festival events, every dungeon path or raid achievements between those entries to follow the main campaign. They can provide additional context, but this guide follows the Story Journal rather than a completionist checklist.

Where dungeon stories fit

Dungeon story modes follow Destiny’s Edge, a group of adventurers connected to the core campaign. Play those alongside the personal story if you want that extra context. They are five-player content, so this is where following more of the story can mean finding a group. Explorable paths add challenges and rewards; completing every path is not required to move into Living World.

Living World seasons in chronological order

Expansions are the major campaign releases. Living World seasons are episodic continuations between them, not disconnected side stories. Skipping directly from Heart of Thorns to Path of Fire leaves Season 3 out of the middle; jumping from Path of Fire to End of Dragons leaves both Season 4 and The Icebrood Saga behind. You can make those jumps, but the dialogue will assume you know people and events introduced in the missing chapters.

Season 1 is the awkward entry in older guides. It originally ran as temporary releases, then returned in a permanent, replayable form in 2022. Put that returned version after your personal story. Its later re-release date does not make it a chapter to play after End of Dragons.

For the same reason, follow the episode order inside each season. Start The Icebrood Saga with its prologue instead of treating Champions as a separate campaign. A returning player who stopped halfway through a season should finish that block before starting the next expansion.

Which story chapters are free now?

Access checked 24 October 2026: the core story and Living World Seasons 1 and 2 are free. Season 2 became free on 13 October, so older advice telling you to buy it with gems is out of date.

Seasons 3 and 4 now come with the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire bundle. The Icebrood Saga comes with End of Dragons. Existing owners receive missing episodes automatically; individual Living World purchases have been removed. Check your account’s unlocked chapters before buying another bundle.

Each later expansion unlocks its own campaign. Our Living World bundle news explains the purchase change and refunds in more detail. Here, the useful distinction is simple: the product that unlocks a chapter is not necessarily the chapter immediately before it in the story.

Do not use the old rule that The Icebrood Saga is simply a separate gem purchase requiring Path of Fire. The October 2026 announcement changed how it is supplied. If access still looks wrong, check ArenaNet’s current bundle information and your account entitlements before spending money.

How to start the next chapter in the Story Journal

  1. Open your Hero Panel and select the Story Journal, the story tab marked with a star icon. Its campaign list gives you the main story order in-game.
  2. Find the season or expansion you want, choose its first unfinished episode and begin or resume that story.
  3. Follow the green story marker for the active objective.

The personal story accompanies leveling; Living World and expansion campaigns are level-80 content. Seeing a later campaign in the journal does not mean your character can already enter it. Check both your level and account access if a chapter is locked.

You can switch the active campaign, so a newer expansion does not erase the earlier story. The important check when returning is which chapter this particular character has finished. Account ownership tells you what you can play; journal progress tells you where that character left off.

For a first playthrough, resist accepting whichever expansion prompt looks newest. Find the last campaign you recognize and work downward from there. It is easier to avoid a spoiler than to unlearn one from an opening cutscene.

Can you skip Heart of Thorns or Path of Fire?

Yes, if you meet the level and access requirements. Completing every older campaign is not the admission fee for a newer expansion. That freedom is useful when you want to play with friends, but an expansion’s opening can reveal what happened earlier.

If the story matters to you, stay with the order above and accept that some travel unlocks will arrive later. If joining friends matters more, make the detour deliberately, then return to your unfinished chapter. Unlocking a useful system and following the plot are different goals; the game lets you choose between them.

The same applies to a level-80 boost. It changes your character’s level, not how much of the story you have seen. You can be ready to enter an expansion mechanically while still being at the beginning of the narrative.

Do you need the original Guild Wars first?

You can begin with Guild Wars 2’s personal story. The original Guild Wars provides background to Tyria, but playing all its campaigns is a separate project rather than a prerequisite for this route. The entire story listed above belongs to GW2. Explore the older game if you want that earlier history, not because you need another purchase before starting the base game.

Returning after End of Dragons: where to resume

Check the journal before buying anything. If you finished Heart of Thorns years ago, start with Season 3. If you finished Path of Fire but skipped its releases, begin with Season 4, then The Icebrood Saga. If you finished End of Dragons at launch, check its later story chapters before moving into Secrets of the Obscure.

You do not need to restart the whole game because you forgot a supporting character’s name. Read your completed journal entries, find the first unfinished block and continue. Keep the GW2 event timer handy for open-world breaks; a story session does not have to become a race through fourteen years of releases.
