GW2 Living World free update: Season 2 opens to everyone
Season 2 is free; later GW2 Living World seasons now come with expansions. Check access, Gem refunds and bundles before buying.
Guild Wars 2 · News · October 14, 2026
Guild Wars 2 has removed the separate Living World purchase step. Season 2 is free for level-80 characters, Seasons 3 and 4 come with the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire bundle, and The Icebrood Saga comes with End of Dragons. If you already own the relevant expansions, missing episodes are added automatically.
Living World is Guild Wars 2's episodic story content between expansions. Each season groups several episodes. ArenaNet introduced the access change on 13 October. For new and returning players, it removes the awkward gap between buying an expansion and discovering that the story around it was another purchase. The story has not been rewritten. The checkout has.
Which Guild Wars 2 Living World episodes do you get?
Living World seasons are no longer sold individually. If an older guide tells you to buy missed episodes separately, that purchase advice no longer matches the October 13 change. You do not need to wait for an episode login window to receive the content now included with your expansions. The practical question is now which expansions you own, rather than how many episodes you still need to buy. Before spending anything, check your story journal and your account's expansion ownership.
For new players starting with a free account, Season 2 gives you a clearer route from the personal story into Heart of Thorns. The later expansion stories still require their associated purchases. “Season 2 is free” does not mean the entire expansion catalogue is free.
If you are returning to an older account, check the missing chapters first. ArenaNet says the relevant episodes are added automatically for existing expansion owners. You do not need to rebuy a bundle merely to claim content your account now qualifies for.
Bought Living World recently? Check your Gems
Living World purchases made after 12 September 2026 qualify for an automatic Gem refund. ArenaNet also includes partial Gem refunds for eligible Elder Dragon Saga—Complete Collection purchases. This is an account credit in Gems, not a promise of cash back.
If the refund or the new Starter Pack items have not arrived by 15 October, ArenaNet asks you to contact support@arena.net. Keep that date separate from the announcement: it is the support checkpoint, not a deadline to buy anything.
For an older purchase, do not assume the same refund applies. The announced cutoff is specific. The account's transaction history matters more than an old receipt for an unrelated expansion.
Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire and End of Dragons bundles
The revised bundles group the older and newer expansion arcs separately:
Seasons 1 and 2 remain free outside those purchases.
Starter Pack additions
The Starter Pack adds:
- A Copper-Fed Salvage-o-Matic
- Five Teleport to Friend devices
- Two Black Lion Chest Keys
Previous Starter Pack buyers receive the additions through in-game mail. Existing expansion owners do not receive those expansions' character and shared-inventory slots a second time by buying a bundle.
Steam's dynamic bundle pricing accounts for content you already own. ArenaNet lists offers through its own store, Steam and Epic, so compare the offer for your account rather than copying a price from someone else's checkout. Prices vary by offer and storefront; check the current checkout for your region and account.
The useful change is the missing story step
This makes the catalogue easier to approach. You can follow more of the story with the expansions you already bought, and a free account gets another season before its next purchase. It does not tell you which expansion you will enjoy most, or make an expensive collection the right first choice.
Start with your ownership and the next story chapter you want to play. Open the story journal, check which Living World episodes are available, then compare only the expansion you still need. For more Guild Wars 2 articles and build tools, start at our Guild Wars 2 hub.
