Confidence Man makes getting out harder than getting rich

Raise the promised return, grow next month’s bill, then survive the wait to escape. A look at Confidence Man’s Ponzi-scheme decisions and free demo.

Promising a higher return brings more money through the door. It also makes next month harder to survive. Confidence Man turns that problem into a card-based roguelike about running a Ponzi scheme in 1924: you pay existing investors with new deposits, then decide how long to keep the lie going.

GoGoGoGo's single-player game is available on Steam for Windows. Its most interesting decision is when to stop. Declaring your escape doesn't end the run immediately; you still have to keep the operation alive while the money leaves.

Higher interest, a bigger bill

Each month, you choose a promised return of 5%, 10%, 20% or 40%. According to the developer, a higher rate draws in cash faster, but also increases the following month's obligations and raises suspicion. The money on your desk isn't simply profit you can spend.

Investors appear as cards with different deposits and behaviour. One might keep the scheme afloat with a large investment, then become a problem when they panic. Action cards and the operating methods you draft give you ways to recruit people, manage pressure or change how the scheme works.

Leaving takes two more months

The default escape process takes two months. The developer describes money moving into your getaway case while payments continue and suspicion rises. That's the useful twist: choosing to leave is another risk to manage, rather than a button that instantly makes your current balance safe.

Some drafted methods alter those rules. The store describes a fast boat that shortens the process to one month, giving you a reason to think about an exit before you actually need one.

Try the demo before buying

A free Steam demo covers the first twelve months of a scheme. Its listing says it includes sixteen operating methods, four recurring crises and both collapse and escape outcomes. The full game removes the month limit and adds further characters, another crisis and a third ending. Earned notoriety carries over, according to the developer.

If you enjoy planning around a growing liability, this is a concrete way to see whether the decisions hold your interest. I haven't played it, so this isn't a verdict on the balance or replayability.
