Haven't played it yet, but a "Spore meets Warframe" creature-collector with this much evolution and splicing depth has my attention — and it launched to Very Positive Steam reviews and an OpenCritic 82. Here's what it is, and what's worth watching before you buy.

Voidling Bound is an action-packed sci-fi creature-collector and 3rd-person shooter from Quebec indie studio Hatchery Games, out now in full release as of 9 June 2026 on Steam and the Epic Games Store for $24.99 / £22.49. It's been pitched as "Spore meets Warframe": you bind your mind to powerful space creatures called Voidlings and pilot them directly through real-time combat, evolving, breeding and splicing them between missions. It launched to a Steam rating of Very Positive and an OpenCritic score of 82. One thing to know up front: it's single-player only, and consoles are confirmed but undated.

What Voidling Bound is

An action-packed sci-fi 3rd-person shooter

At its core, Voidling Bound is a sci-fi shooter crossed with a creature-collector; the alien creatures you collect, raise and control are called Voidlings. Hatchery Games, a small Quebec City studio of roughly nine devs with credits on Skylanders and Borderlands, describe it as a blend of Spore and Warframe, and that's a fair shorthand for the mix of run-and-gun combat and creature-raising.

A fresh take on the monster-taming genre

Where most of the monster-taming genre has you command creatures from the sidelines like in Pokémon, Voidling Bound puts you in the driver's seat: you bind to a creature and are the monster in the field. That direct-control twist is the whole pitch, and it's what sets it apart from the collect-and-command formula.

You play a Space Wrangler

You play a Space Wrangler, part of a five-person crew sent to reclaim lush planets overrun by a parasitic corruption called The Lesion. The only things naturally immune are the Voidlings — alien creatures your tech lets you mentally bind to and control directly. The premise is the strongest part of the writing; the story around it is light, told through an opening cutscene, crew chatter and mission logs, with no character voice acting. The draw is the loop, not the narrative.

Voidling Bound runs on two phases. On your ship, you upgrade and raise your Voidlings: evolve them with elemental mutagens, pour points into species-wide skill trees, acquire and hatch eggs, breed pairs to pass on stats, and — later — splice creatures together to design your own. Skill upgrades apply to a whole species at once rather than a single pet — a smart anti-grind touch most reviewers singled out as you learn each one's kit.

Each Voidling evolves along branching paths of around thirty forms split across elements, pushing distinct variants into the hundreds. Splicing lets you shape a bespoke monster's appearance, element and moveset from parts pulled across species.

Missions, bosses and the Abyss

On missions, you drop to a corrupted planet and play the shooter — jump, dash, shoot and battle to overcome bubonic swarms, discover hidden eggs and mutagens, and defeat the pestilent bosses waiting at the end of each level. The campaign runs about ten hours; after it, an endless roguelite mode called The Abyss is where the long-haul build-crafting and endgame content live, rewarding whatever playstyle you've leaned into.

Reception has been good. The Steam user rating sits at Very Positive — around 93% of several hundred reviews at launch, building on a demo that was Overwhelmingly Positive through Steam Next Fest. It peaked north of 8,000 concurrent players on launch day off the back of roughly 400,000 wishlists. What players love: the creature evolution and splicing systems, satisfying combat, a colorful art style, and a soundtrack by Melodysheep.

The catch

Where it falls short

The criticisms are just as consistent. The story is forgettable and missions get repetitive — a handful of types repeated across three planets. Balance is rough: certain elements (Plasma especially) and defensive options are strong enough that players accidentally build near-unkillable Voidlings, which deflates the challenge. The campaign is short, nine species can feel scarce next to the genre's biggest names, and difficulty settings change enemy strength without changing rewards.

No co-op, and a launch crash to know about

Two practical notes. There's no co-op — it's the single most-requested feature, the game feels built for it, and Hatchery hasn't committed to adding it. And there's a known launch crash tied to Intel NPU drivers on newer "AI Boost" CPUs; updating the NPU driver is the current fix.

A fun action game you can sink into solo — easy to jump in and find your footing fast.
