Diablo 5 — everything we know
Blizzard announced Diablo V at BlizzCon 2026 on 12 September: “Diablo V is officially in development and coming Spring 2029.” Sanctuary has already fallen, there is no home base to return to, and the loot is being pulled back toward Diablo II. Everything confirmed so far is below, and so is everything that is still open.
Latest updates ↓Every Diablo 5 update so far
The BlizzCon panel went past the teaser and into structure. You play “As Heir to Westmarch, on the run through the charred remains of a kingdom”, survival is “no longer tied to towns or conquered strongholds”, and the world is “a procedural landscape where terrain, points of interest, monsters, and reward can change when you return”. Three classes were shown, itemization is “inspired by Diablo II”, and Blizzard set expectations for the wait: “Diablo V is still early in development”, with “regular updates offering a closer look at our progress” starting in 2027.
The game got its own site the same day. It carries one line of premise — “Diablo V is in development. Sanctuary has fallen. Diablo won.” — a short teaser, the Spring 2029 window, and an email form: “Sign up to receive future updates and be among the first to discover what’s next for Diablo.” There is nothing to buy on it and no platform named. The older diablo.blizzard.com still redirects to Diablo IV.
Blizzard put the title, the premise and the window on stage in one line: “Diablo V is officially in development and coming Spring 2029.” The framing was blunt — “For the first time, players will enter a Sanctuary where Diablo has triumphed and its heroes have been defeated.” No gameplay, no platforms, no price. Unlike the new StarCraft announced at the same show, the title carries its number: Blizzard wrote the fifth instalment down as the fifth instalment.
The same ceremony handled the present. Season of Hell’s Legacy “begins rolling out on September 15, 9:30 a.m. PT”, the Amazon “is coming to Diablo IV in the first half of 2027” across four archetypes with the javelin as a new weapon type, and the Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection “is coming to Nintendo Switch™ 2 on September 15.” Blizzard also confirmed that it and Netflix “are developing a new animated series set in the world of Diablo”, and marked thirty years with a number: “More than 130 million players worldwide have entered Sanctuary across the Diablo franchise.”
What Blizzard has actually said
Two posts, one teaser and a sign-up page. That is the whole confirmed set — and it is unusually specific about how the game works and unusually silent about how you will buy it.
The new Diablo game is real, and the number is not in dispute
Blizzard’s sentence is short enough to quote whole: “Diablo V is officially in development and coming Spring 2029.” That is worth noting, because Blizzard often announces a game and lets the press invent the numbering — the new StarCraft, announced at the same show, carries no numeral at all. Here the publisher wrote the fifth instalment down as the fifth instalment. The only thing still in dispute is whether you type a V or a 5.
Sanctuary has already fallen, and that is the premise
Diablo 5 starts after the loss. The panel post states it plainly — “the heroes of the past have failed, Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won” — and sharpens it a few paragraphs later: “This is not Sanctuary waiting for the apocalypse. It is already living through one.” It is a premise with teeth, because it removes the reward structure the series has run on. You are not holding a line. The line is gone.
You are the Heir to Westmarch
This is the part most of the coverage skipped. You are not an anonymous adventurer answering a call. You play “As Heir to Westmarch, on the run through the charred remains of a kingdom”, and the Western Continent is where Diablo’s reign is centred. Among the things hunting you are Diablo’s lieutenants: of the heroes who fell, “a terrifying few have been corrupted into Dread Commanders.”
Survival is no longer tied to towns
Blizzard does not say towns are gone. It says something more specific: “With Sanctuary under Diablo’s rule, survival is no longer tied to towns or conquered strongholds.” In their place you build “a caravan of allies who travel with you through the scorched wastes.” The caravan is not set dressing — “These allies will be both vendors and steadfast companions, a growing community full of stories to discover.” So the vendor function, the thing a town is actually for in an action RPG, has a stated new home that walks with you. Named examples so far include a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a stranded Treasure Goblin.
Parts of the world can change when you come back
Blizzard frames this as story before system: Sanctuary “itself is no longer stable”, which is “reflected by a procedural landscape where terrain, points of interest, monsters, and reward can change when you return.” Note the “can”. How much of the map moves, and how often, is not stated. Diablo IV’s overworld is fixed and populated with events; this points the other way, but the size of the step is still unknown.
Itemization goes back to Diablo II, and your inventory matters again
“Itemization in Diablo V is inspired by Diablo II.” Three concrete consequences were named: “We’re experimenting with stat requirements on gear”, larger items “once again take up more slots in your inventory”, and gear-based sets are returning. Crafting is described as “a rich and deep crafting system, inspired by Lord of Hatred’s approach, with Diablo II-style Runes and Runewords.” Runes and Runewords are not new to the series in 2026 — they came back in Diablo IV with Vessel of Hatred. What is new is the stated benchmark: not Diablo IV’s version, but Diablo II’s.
Three announced classes so far, and the new one spreads plague
The Demon Hunter “returns to stalk the forces of Hell with twin crossbows, striking from the shadows and leaping across the battlefield to annihilate their prey.” The Monk “brings martial perfection back to Sanctuary, battering demons to a pulp with fists and calling down holy power to smite those who stand in their path.” The Plague Knight is the new one: “the embodiment of walking death. They roam the battlefield, spreading disease and pestilence, ultimately consuming it for power.” Blizzard was careful about the count: “These are only the first of the classes we’ll reveal on the road to Diablo V, with more details on their combat, progression, and build possibilities to come.” That is a promise of more, not a number. Anyone quoting a class total is quoting a guess.
Spring 2029 is thirty months out, give or take
“Diablo V is still early in development.” Count month against month rather than year against year, because the round number misleads in both directions. September 2026 to March 2029 is thirty months; to the far edge of a spring window, June 2029, it is thirty-three. So the honest answer is two and a half to nearly three years, depending on where in spring the game lands, and Blizzard has not narrowed the window. Announcing that far out, at that stage, is a choice: it gives Diablo IV room to finish its own roadmap without every season being read as a holding pattern, and it comes with a schedule for the wait — regular updates from 2027.
What Blizzard has not said: platforms, price and more classes
The blanks are as useful as the facts, because they are where the wrong answers come from. There is no platform list — not in either post, not on the game’s own page. There is no price, no edition, and no word on how it will be sold. There is no beta, no playtest and no pre-order; diablo5.blizzard.com collects email addresses and nothing else. There is no store listing on Steam or Battle.net. And there is no class count: a number is circulating in the coverage, and it is not in any Blizzard source.
Where this leaves Diablo 4 while you wait
Diablo IV is not being wound down. The Amazon returns in the first half of 2027 across four archetypes, with the javelin arriving as a new weapon type — a return rather than a new class, and Blizzard says so: “Her return preserves the disciplined, athletic, and highly trained warrior fantasy players remember while reimagining the class for Diablo IV.” Season of Hell’s Legacy begins rolling out on 15 September 2026, and the Age of Hatred Collection brings the base game and both expansions to Switch 2 the same day.
Who Diablo 5 is for
- You played Diablo II and want stat requirements and inventory pressure back
- Runewords measured against Diablo II rather than Diablo IV is the headline for you
- A Sanctuary with no fixed home base sounds like a feature, not a missing one
- You are comfortable following a game for two and a half years before you play it
- You need to know the platform and the price before you care
- Announcements without gameplay do nothing for you
- You are deep in Diablo IV and would rather not think about its successor yet
- Procedural worlds are the thing that put you off action RPGs
Still unconfirmed: platforms, price and business model, the total class count, multiplayer and co-op, whether the world is shared, the exact release month, and whether any beta or playtest is planned. There is no Steam page and no Battle.net product page; diablo5.blizzard.com is a sign-up page, not a store. Everything above comes from three Blizzard sources published on 12 September 2026 — the opening ceremony recap, the Diablo V panel post, and the game’s own site. Where the coverage has filled a gap with a guess, this page leaves the gap open.
Diablo 5 questions, answered
Is Diablo 5 confirmed?
Yes. Blizzard announced Diablo V at the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on 12 September 2026, stating that it is officially in development and coming in Spring 2029. It is the first confirmation of a fifth mainline Diablo game, and the game has its own page at diablo5.blizzard.com.
When does Diablo 5 come out?
Spring 2029. Blizzard has given a season, not a date or a month, and says the game is still early in development. Counted from September 2026 that is thirty months to the start of spring 2029 and thirty-three to the end of it — two and a half to nearly three years.
What platforms is Diablo 5 coming to?
Blizzard has not said. Neither announcement post names a platform, the official Diablo V page names none either, and there is no listing on Steam or Battle.net. Any platform list quoted today is an assumption carried over from Diablo IV.
What classes are in Diablo 5?
Three have been shown: the Demon Hunter, the Monk, and the all-new Plague Knight, who spreads disease across the battlefield and then consumes it for power. Blizzard called these “only the first of the classes we’ll reveal” and has not given a total.
Is there Diablo 5 gameplay to watch?
No extended gameplay. Blizzard has published a teaser on diablo5.blizzard.com and the full Forging the Next Era panel on its own YouTube channel, but the panel talks through the world, the classes and the item systems rather than showing a play session.
Is there a Diablo 5 beta or pre-order?
No. There is no beta, no playtest and nothing to pre-order. Blizzard runs a sign-up page at diablo5.blizzard.com, but it only collects email addresses for future updates. With a Spring 2029 window and an early development stage, none of the rest would be expected yet.
Is Diablo 5 an MMO or a shared world?
Blizzard has not described the multiplayer structure at all. What it has described is a procedural overworld and a travelling caravan of allies in place of towns. Whether other players appear in that world is an open question.
Will Diablo 4 keep getting updates after Diablo 5?
Yes. Season of Hell’s Legacy begins rolling out on 15 September 2026, and the Age of Hatred Collection brings the base game and both expansions to Switch 2 the same day. The furthest Blizzard has dated is the Amazon’s return in the first half of 2027 — the only Diablo IV milestone currently on the record beyond this month.
Why does Blizzard write Diablo V when everyone else writes Diablo 5?
Blizzard has written the series in Roman numerals since Diablo II in 2000, so its own posts and its site say Diablo V. Search behaviour never followed, and most people looking for the game type Diablo 5. Both refer to the same title announced on 12 September 2026.
