Honkai: Nexus Anima — everything we know
Honkai: Nexus Anima is miHoYo’s creature-collecting adventure strategy game and the latest major entry in the Honkai series — the studio’s first proper monster-taming game after Honkai Impact 3rd and Honkai: Star Rail. You play a plane-hopping traveler who has escaped captivity, starting out in a quiet town called Iia and forging bonds with creatures called Anima, the scattered remnants of a shattered order. Those bonds turn into powers, and the powers turn into Nexus Battles. Two closed beta tests have run so far, the game was playable on the show floor at gamescom 2026, and pre-registration is open. What does not exist yet is a release date — not a day, not a month, not a year. This page collects every confirmed detail in one place and updates as news drops.

What’s confirmed about Honkai: Nexus Anima
This page is for three people: someone deciding whether to pre-register, someone who got into one of the closed betas and wants to know what happens next, and someone who keeps seeing the game in HoYoverse announcements and cannot work out how close it actually is. It is a tracker, not a review. Everything below is either something miHoYo said, with the date it said it, or something explicitly marked as not yet said.
One thing to be clear about up front, because it shapes everything else: there is no score on this page and no verdict, because Crit Pick has not played it. What exists in public is second-hand and short — two closed betas that ended in data wipes, limited hands-on sessions at HoYo FEST across Southeast Asia, and a demo on the gamescom show floor that the press wrote up. Nobody has lived with the finished game, because there is no finished game yet. And while HoYoverse’s other titles are all free-to-play gacha games, miHoYo has said nothing about whether this one is. So if you arrived here from a list of upcoming gacha games, treat that label as an assumption rather than a fact.
Most of what is known about this game comes from three miHoYo statements — the announcement, the Evolution Test overview and the gamescom line-up — plus two closed betas that ended in data wipes. That makes for an unusual confirmed pile: the fiction and the systems are described in real detail, while the commercial facts every player actually asks about are missing entirely. Here is the split, starting with what the game is and ending with what nobody has said.

Nexus, Aspects and the Sundering — the fiction in one paragraph
Nexus is miHoYo’s name for the unseen bonds woven between paired Aspects: Love and Hate, Light and Dark, Life and Death, Reality and Illusion. The Sundering shattered those bonds and scattered the Aspects’ remnant power across the world as Anima. That is not just backstory — it is the mechanical premise. Every Anima embodies a concept, bonding with one unlocks the ability that reflects it, and those abilities combine into battle tactics. The setting explains the systems rather than decorating them, which is a harder trick than it sounds and the reason the pitch has stayed identical across thirteen months of announcements.
You play someone who escaped, not someone who was chosen
The protagonist is a plane-hopping traveler who has escaped captivity, and the journey begins in Iia, a quiet town in the Reality Plane that opens onto uncharted realms. The framing miHoYo keeps returning to is that the truth about the protagonist’s past surfaces gradually as the journey goes on — the mystery is the player character, not the villain. For a studio whose last two Honkai games opened on a catastrophe, starting on a town bench is a deliberate change of register.
Anima evolve, and evolution is framed as a relationship, not a stat
Evolution is described as one of the most wondrous phenomena across the Planes, and miHoYo is explicit that each transformation signals a bond taking shape: the Anima grows stronger to protect the moment that first brought the two of you together. Whether that survives contact with a gacha economy is a fair question, but the design intent is stated plainly and repeatedly. On top of evolution sit two things that are pure keepsake rather than power: you can take a unique photo of an Anima, and you can give each one a name of its own.
Chromatic Anima are the rare-encounter hook
On “especially fortunate days”, in miHoYo’s phrasing, players may cross paths with a rare Chromatic Anima. No rate, no roster count and no acquisition detail has been made public — which is exactly the gap where a monetisation model usually turns out to live. It is worth flagging now: a shiny-hunt mechanic in a free-to-play HoYoverse game is the single most load-bearing unknown on this page, and nothing said so far tells you whether Chromatic Anima are found, pulled, or both.
Iia is a real place, with factions in it
The Evolution Test opened the starting town up considerably: the lively streets of the New Quarter, commercial spaces, architectural landmarks, and two named locations — Nexus Hall and the True Nexus Building — where key figures from different factions come into view, their ideals and actions revealing what miHoYo calls the world’s hidden complexity. Nanafey, Bai Mei and Olympia were introduced as characters the traveler meets along the way. A hub town with rival factions and a landmark you visit for plot is an MMO structure attached to a creature collector, and it is the clearest signal of how long this game expects to hold you.
Two closed betas, both wiped, both invitation-only
The Nexus Bond Test took sign-ups until 12 September 2025 and ran on PC and iOS in English, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese. The Evolution Test began on 9 July 2026 and added Android. Both were free, limited and ended in a data wipe, and access ran through the same funnel: pre-register on the official site, complete the recruitment survey, wait to be selected. miHoYo did not publish an end date for the Evolution Test when it announced it, and the studio has not announced a third test.
gamescom was a checkpoint, not a launch runway
From 26 to 30 August 2026 the game was playable in Hall 6.1, Booth B030 at Koelnmesse in Cologne, on a booth built as a town where humans and Anima share a life shaped by bonds — scenic design, signs of Anima life through the townscape, a giant Umpurrella installation and limited-edition giveaways. Visitors tried Anima collecting, world exploration and Nexus Battles. Read the omission rather than the spectacle: a studio with a date to announce announces it at gamescom, and HoYoverse announced a booth.

Honkai: Nexus Anima questions, answered
What is Honkai: Nexus Anima?
It’s a creature-collecting adventure strategy game from miHoYo and the latest major entry in the Honkai series, after Honkai Impact 3rd and Honkai: Star Rail. You play a plane-hopping traveler who has escaped captivity and sets out from a town called Iia, forging bonds with creatures called Anima. Each Anima embodies one half of a paired concept — Love and Hate, Light and Dark — and bonding with it unlocks the power that concept represents, which then shapes both how you fight and how you explore the overworld.
When is the Honkai: Nexus Anima release date?
There isn’t one. miHoYo has never announced a release date for Honkai: Nexus Anima — not a day, not a launch window, not even a year. The game was announced in August 2025, has run two closed beta tests since, and was playable at gamescom in August 2026, all without a date being given. This page updates the moment one is announced.
What platforms is Honkai: Nexus Anima on?
PC, iOS and Android. Those are the three platforms miHoYo has announced and the three the Evolution Test ran on; the first test, in 2025, was PC and iOS only. No console version has been confirmed — there is no announced PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch release, and the game was shown on PC at gamescom.
Is Honkai: Nexus Anima open world, and how does the combat work?
Both halves of that are answered by miHoYo’s phrasing rather than by a spec sheet. The studio describes an expansive overworld that opens out from the town of Iia into uncharted realms, and says the abilities you unlock from bonded Anima change how you explore, solve challenges and engage with that world — so exploration is a system, not a backdrop. Fighting happens in what miHoYo calls Nexus Battles, where bonded Anima stand beside you and their abilities combine into tactics. The studio’s own label for the whole package is adventure strategy; it is the press and Wikipedia calling the combat an auto battler, and no turn structure has been detailed.
Is there multiplayer, co-op or PvP in Honkai: Nexus Anima?
Nothing has been announced. No miHoYo statement mentions co-op, PvP or any multiplayer mode, and Wikipedia lists the game as single-player. That is an absence of information rather than a confirmed no — but if you are hoping to play this one alongside someone, there is currently nothing to point at.
Can I play Honkai: Nexus Anima right now?
No. Both tests so far were limited closed betas that ended in a data wipe, and neither is running. The only other way anyone has played it is in person, at HoYo FEST across Southeast Asia in late July and on the gamescom show floor in August — both gone. What you can do is pre-register on the official site at hna.hoyoverse.com, which is also the funnel HoYoverse has used to pick testers: pre-registrants who complete the recruitment survey go into the pool for selection. No third test has been announced.
What was the Evolution Test?
It was the second closed beta, beginning on 9 July 2026 on PC, iOS and Android — free, limited, invitation-only and wiped afterwards. It expanded the core gameplay and story with new characters, Anima, regions and systems: Anima evolution, naming and photographing your companions, rare Chromatic Anima, a much fuller version of the starting town Iia, and the characters Nanafey, Bai Mei and Olympia. miHoYo did not publish an end date for it.
Is Honkai: Nexus Anima free to play, and is it gacha?
Not confirmed, either way. miHoYo has not announced a price or a monetisation model for Honkai: Nexus Anima. Both closed beta tests were free, and every current HoYoverse title is free-to-play with gacha, so the expectation is reasonable — but it is an expectation, not an announcement, and the studio has said nothing about how Anima are obtained.
How many Anima are there?
Unknown. miHoYo has never published a roster count. What has been confirmed is that Anima evolve, that each one embodies an Aspect, that you can name them and take a unique photo with them, and that rare Chromatic Anima can be encountered on especially fortunate days. Umpurrella, the creature HoYoverse built a giant installation of at gamescom, is the closest thing the game has to a mascot.
Do Honkai Impact 3rd and Star Rail characters appear in it?
Partly — and less firmly than the internet suggests. Wikipedia describes the game as using some characters from Honkai Impact 3rd and Honkai: Star Rail, and the official site’s own page metadata lists names such as Kiana, Blade and Otto next to the new cast of Nanafey, Bai Mei and Olympia. But miHoYo’s announcements name only the new characters. Treat the returning faces as strongly indicated rather than confirmed until a statement says so.
