Sea of Remnants — everything we know
Everything known about Sea of Remnants — the ocean-fantasy open world journey from NetEase Games and Joker Studio — in one place, updated as news drops. The game has already launched in China, has a global closed beta booked for December 2026, and carries a Steam release window that reads simply 2027. That is why almost every date you will read about it is wrong in some way: this page keeps the Chinese release, the global beta and the global launch apart.

Update log
The official channel published a ten-minute extended showcase, the longest continuous look at the game so far — sailing, boarding, turn based combat and the Orbtopia hub in one cut. Source: Sea of Remnants on YouTube.
At Gamescom Opening Night Live, NetEase Games confirmed a global Closed Beta Test for December 2026 and opened pre-registration. No sign-up deadline, regional breakdown or NDA terms have been published — December is the entire granularity that exists. The reveal came with a ninety-second gameplay showcase, scored by Winds of Memories. Source: MMORPG.com.
A developer post ahead of the show confirmed the beta will run on PC, console and mobile rather than PC alone, published the launch platform list, and committed NetEase to developer updates at least once every two months. Source: Massively Overpowered.
The Android and iOS versions went live in China, with cross-save against the PC client. Source: IT Home.
Sea of Remnants launched commercially in China on PC, shipping with two sea regions and a third promised for the end of the month, plus a stated plan of more than twenty crew members in the first month. This is a full release, not a test — and it is the single largest source of confusion in English-language coverage. Source: IT Home.
A crew trailer ran at Summer Game Fest. Days later the Xbox Series X|S versions were spotted as a live Xbox.com listing rather than announced — NetEase confirmed them properly only later. Source: PowerUp!.
A PC closed alpha ran for a week and produced the first substantial press coverage. Reactions split hard on monetisation: one outlet described grinding currency to gamble for characters, while the studio told another that everything would be unlockable without spending money. The R.S character trailer released alongside it is still the channel's biggest video.
Sign-ups opened for the Wanderer Test alongside a gameplay preview called Wave! — at more than eight million views it is still the second most watched video on the channel, and the first extended look at sailing and the turn based combat loop. Coverage at the time still described the game as launching that year on PC and PlayStation 5, which is the window Steam has since moved to 2027.
The full reveal announced Sea of Remnants for PS5, PC, iOS and Android as a free-to-play title targeting 2026 — a window Steam has since moved to 2027. The gameplay reveal trailer is still the clearest look at the pitch. Source: Gematsu.

What we know
Everything below has been shown or stated by Joker Studio and NetEase Games, or is taken from the official Steam listing. Where a number is given, it is theirs.
You play a puppetfolk sailor with no memory, setting out across a sea that erases it. Steam files the game under Adventure, RPG and Strategy, and as free-to-play. NetEase's own pitch calls the premise a reckless voyage, and press coverage has reached for wildly different comparisons — Sea of Thieves crossed with Persona, an Age of Sail take on Honkai: Star Rail, a turn-based roguelike. The presentation is a distinctive visual style built on stylized animated visuals rather than photorealism, and it is the first thing every hands-on report mentions.
Fights on foot are turn based combat closest in feel to the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei lineage, with a dice layer on top — a mechanic reported as Rogue's Luck can grant extra turns, which turns each fight into a run of small gambles. Sailing is a separate mode that plays in real time: you set sail from Orbtopia, fight enemy vessels and sea beasts directly, and either steer manually or hand the wheel to an automatic system. Ship upgrades are functional rather than cosmetic, and crew assignment matters to how the vessel performs.
NetEase's Gamescom material states that routes, encounters, enemies, equipment, skills, buffs and dice effects can all change from one voyage to the next, with the explicit design goal that players adapt their build instead of repeating a single winning strategy. Enhancement dice and shanties modify what the crew can do. Dying at sea costs cargo rather than progress — hands-on reports describe waterproof bags and couriers that carry goods back to a distant port — so failed voyages are part of the design rather than an interruption to it.
Between voyages you return to Orbtopia, the hub the game calls the City Between Voyages. It is the one place the sea cannot reach and the only place progress sticks: repairing the ship, upgrading gear, building relationships, and growing a settlement that starts as a shack and a broken dockyard into an evolving pirate city. Lost memories recovered at sea are spent and displayed here rather than in a menu. One note on the name, because it appears both ways in coverage: Steam and the great majority of sources say Orbtopia, and the single Gamescom write-up that rendered it Aetopia appears to be a transcription error.
The world is built around varied, mysterious seas rather than one flat ocean. Routes run past volcanic peaks and jungle coasts, sun bleached islands, eerie ruins, strange tribal grounds, whirlpools and leviathan-scale bosses. Steam's own description credits real ocean physics, creature behaviors and environmental systems as the foundation, which is a stronger claim than most games in this genre make. The framing throughout is that a sailor faces uncharted waters with incomplete information.
Functionally, yes, this is a gacha. The Steam store page carries the declaration chance based in-game purchases, which is Valve's mandatory disclosure for gacha mechanics, and it comes from the publisher's own store submission. NetEase Games has never used the word itself; its lead producer said during a February 2026 press trip that characters are sold in a gacha-style manner but that everything will be unlockable without spending real money. At Gamescom the studio described a weekly system said to guarantee a purple-rarity crew member or signature weapon per completed weekly voyage, with a reported fifty percent weekly chance at the higher black rarity and a hard pity in the third week. Those percentages came from the press briefing rather than official documentation, so treat them as briefing-room detail for now. Worth noting for contrast: NetEase's other big free-to-play RPG, Ananta, went the other way and confirmed that its characters are not gacha-locked at all.
The Steam page publishes a full spec sheet even though the game is not yet purchasable. Minimum: Windows 10 or 11 64-bit or later, an Intel Core i7-9700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600X, 16 GB of RAM, a GTX 1060 with 6 GB or an RX 480 with 8 GB, DirectX 11, a broadband connection and 60 GB of storage. Recommended: an Intel Core i7-12700 or AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, 32 GB of RAM, an RTX 3070 Ti or RX 6800 XT, DirectX 12 and 80 GB of storage. Only a Windows tab exists. The broadband requirement in both tiers is one of the few hard signals that the game expects a permanent connection even though Steam files it as single-player.

FAQ
When does Sea of Remnants come out?
There is no global release date. Steam lists 2027 with no further detail, and that window is newer than most coverage suggests — the same field read 2026 as recently as mid-June 2026. A global closed beta is confirmed for December 2026. The game already released in China on 9 July 2026 on PC and 23 July 2026 on mobile. Several aggregators list 31 December 2026; no official source states a day-level date, so treat that as a placeholder.
Is Sea of Remnants out in China?
Yes. It launched on PC on 9 July 2026 and on mobile on 23 July 2026, with cross-save between the two. That is a full commercial release, not a test.
Is Sea of Remnants a gacha game?
Functionally, yes. The Steam store page declares chance based in-game purchases, which is Valve's mandatory disclosure for gacha mechanics. NetEase Games has never used the word itself and states that everything obtainable can be earned without spending real money.
Is Sea of Remnants multiplayer?
Nobody outside the studio knows. Steam lists the game as single-player only, while also requiring a broadband connection and declaring in-game chat and online interactivity. Outlets covering the MMO beat have consistently filed it as multiplayer. NetEase has published no statement on co-op, PvP, shared worlds or whether other players are visible at all. Until the December beta, anyone answering this definitively is filling a gap rather than reporting one.
Is Sea of Remnants a PS5 exclusive?
No. Confirmed platforms are PC, PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, Android, iOS, the ROG Xbox Ally X and Xbox Cloud.
Is Sea of Remnants turn-based?
On land, yes. Fights on foot use turn based combat with a dice layer on top, closer to Persona than to an action RPG. Sailing is the exception: ship-to-ship fighting plays out in real time, so the game switches between the two modes rather than committing to one.
Is Sea of Remnants free to play?
Yes. Steam lists it under the free-to-play category and the official trailers describe it as a free-to-play voyage RPG. It carries in-app purchases, including chance-based ones.
Who develops Sea of Remnants?
Joker Studio, an internal team at NetEase Games best known for Identity V. NetEase Games publishes it. Chinese coverage puts the project at roughly seven years in development, a figure NetEase has not repeated in English.
What is the song in the Sea of Remnants trailer?
The Gamescom 2026 trailer uses Winds of Memories, performed by Jules Galli and based on The Bible or the Gun, licensed courtesy of Sony Music. In the game's fiction the band is called Ranbo.
