WoW Forever Fishing guide: catches, Cooking and useful materials

Start Fishing in WoW Forever: poles and lures, choosing water for your target catch, Cooking and Alchemy materials, and Fishing Bowl utility.

Read guide

Fishing is a secondary profession that can supply food and crafting materials without using a primary slot. Decide whether you want a particular fish, general skill progress or a quiet break; those goals do not always point to the same place to cast.

Brilliant Smallfish

An example use for your gathering materials. The craft belongs to Cooking.

Fishing trainers and Journeyman Fishing

The Forever training reference lists Apprentice Fishing with a cap of 75. Learn Journeyman Fishing at skill 50 to raise the cap to 150. Trainers teach these early ranks, while the later ranks use a book and a quest.

Starting options include Arnold Leland in Stormwind, Grimnur Stonebrand in Ironforge and Kah Mistrunner in Thunder Bluff. Near starting zones, look for trainers beside usable water rather than assuming every teacher stands in a city building. Choose a spot you can reach safely with enough bag space and the Fishing Pole ready.

Fishing Pole, fishing lure and action bar

Equip the fishing pole, apply an eligible lure and put Fishing on a convenient action-bar slot. Cast into suitable water and interact with the splashing bobber. Check that the actual catch succeeds; an escaped fish is not the same as a successful catch toward skill progress.

A lure is a temporary bonus, not a permanent addition to base Fishing skill. Inspect its duration and base-skill requirement before buying a stack. Check the buff again when the session changes from reliable catches to repeated escapes. Your pole's equipped bonus and the trainer's base-skill requirement are separate figures.

How to begin Fishing and catch fish

  1. Learn the profession and equip your fishing pole.
  2. Apply an eligible lure if the water needs a skill bonus.
  3. Cast into suitable water.
  4. Interact with the bobber when you get a bite.

In harder waters, fish can escape even when you respond. Poles, lures and other skill bonuses can help. See Icy Veins' Forever Fishing reference.

Before traveling to a distant fishing spot, check the target fish and the skill needed for productive catches. A long trip to water that is too demanding can leave you with very little usable output.

Fish for the recipe you want

Target useExamples from the checked Forever reference
Early meals
Raw Brilliant Smallfish or Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper
Alchemy oils
Oily Blackmouth, Firefin Snapper or Stonescale Eel
A specific dish
Check its exact raw-fish ingredient before choosing a spot

Catch location matters. A coastline, inland lake and fishing school do not promise the same result. If a session is about one reagent, choose water for that reagent rather than assuming any successful catch advances your material goal.

Pair Fishing with Cooking

Cooking makes use of many catches. Get the relevant recipe before filling your bags; otherwise you can have enough fish but no way to turn it into the meal you wanted.

For early planning, the Forever secondary-skill database lists basic fish dishes at different Cooking skill levels. Fishing skill and Cooking skill remain separate. Catching an ingredient does not mean you can already prepare its dish.

Fishing and Alchemy

Alchemy uses fish for several oils. The checked Fishing reference connects Oily Blackmouth to Blackmouth Oil, Firefin Snapper to Fire Oil and Stonescale Eel to Stonescale Oil. Reserve these separately from fish intended for meals so you do not sell the crafting supply by accident.

Before processing fish, compare the raw and finished ingredient prices and check the complete recipe. A higher oil price does not prove processing is profitable after its input quantity and other materials are counted.

Plan a session you can evaluate

Bring enough bag space and decide what will end the session: a useful quantity of a target fish, a short time limit or a particular skill goal. Record the actual catches if you want to compare locations later. Include travel time, not just time with a line in the water.

If all you need is a small number of fish, buying them may be reasonable. If you enjoy fishing or need a regular supply, gathering them yourself may fit your play better. Neither choice needs a universal gold-per-hour claim.

Fishing Bowl and campsite stat benefits

Blizzard's camp table calls the early feature Fishing Bowl and describes a percentage-stat benefit that overlaps with Blessing of Kings. Community database naming may use Fish Bowl. Do not count the corresponding class buff and camp effect as two independent stacking bonuses. See the official camping explanation.

What to check before using an old Fishing guide

Confirm that its fish, training requirements and events refer to Forever. A familiar location name is not enough evidence that every old schedule or skill threshold still applies. For a specific event or rare catch, check the current in-game conditions before building your session around it. ## Expert Fishing: Old Man Heming in Booty Bay

Buy Expert Fishing – The Bass and You from Old Man Heming in Booty Bay. The training reference lists character level 20 and base Fishing 125 to read it, raising your cap to 225. Make the trip before the 150 cap stops further progress.

A higher effective Fishing level from a lure does not replace the book's base-skill requirement. Check the tooltip before buying, then read the book and confirm the new cap. Keep the trip separate from a search for a stronger fishing rod; those solve different problems.

Artisan Fishing quest: Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme

At character level 35 and Fishing 225, visit Nat Pagle in Dustwallow Marsh and accept the Angler Extreme quest before leaving for the required catches. Completing it raises the cap to 300. Bring the four quest fish back to the quest giver, then confirm the new rank before continuing a long skill session.

Plan the quest journey before casting

Read each quest fish's named area and check the minimap when you arrive. A broad zone name is not a guarantee you are casting in the correct quest water. Bring a fishing lure your current skill allows, bag space and the pole you intend to use. Keep the quest catches apart from fish for Cooking or sale.

Combine travel with your existing flight points or other useful tasks when possible. If you only have time for one leg, complete that part deliberately and keep the catch. Repeatedly visiting random coastlines in the right general region is less useful than checking the quest's actual location text.

Fishing level and catch location are different goals

The Forever leveling reference explains that successful catches in starter water can continue to raise the skill, with training trips at the rank caps. Moving to dangerous water is therefore a material choice, not a requirement for every new skill point.

Starting zones and capital city water

A safe lake in Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh or another starter zone can suit a short session. If you want a different fish, compare nearby water such as Loch Modan or a coast instead. Choose based on the recipe you are supplying and the travel involved, rather than on character level alone.

For an inland lake, the eastern coast and western coast of a region are not interchangeable descriptions. Check the exact water type and target catch. Schools can help you target certain fish, while open water can still be useful for ordinary catches and skill progress.

Fishing vendors, Strong Fishing Pole and Big Iron Fishing Pole

The equipment reference lists Strong Fishing Pole from Fishing Supplies vendors and Big Iron Fishing Pole from Shellfish Traps near Shadowprey Village, with trade as another option. Inspect the current equipment requirements and bonus before choosing an upgrade.

Compare the purchase with an ordinary pole and lure for the water you actually use. A long hunt for a rare rod can be worthwhile if you enjoy it, but it is a different goal from catching enough fish for tonight's meals. Keep the old usable pole until the replacement is ready.

Fish Bowl, Fishing Rack and Fishing Hut

The camping reference says Fishing Rack grants the ability to catch uncommon fish for one hour; Fishing Hut gives access to rare fish for one hour. These effects are separate from an ordinary lure's skill bonus and from the Fish Bowl's camp stat effect.

Uncommon fish and rare fish are not guaranteed every cast

Plan the active campsite benefit around the session in which you will use it. Access to a catch category is not a promise that each cast produces a rare fish. Check the blueprint, skill requirement and required materials before buying ingredients for an advanced camp feature.

If a recipe needs an additional prepared fish ingredient, distinguish that item from the raw catch. Camping materials and meals may compete for the same stock. Reserve the exact recipe's inputs before cooking or selling your remaining fish.

Fish recipes: keep Fishing and Cooking skill separate

Your Fishing skill controls catches, while Cooking controls which meal you can prepare. Before collecting a large stock, obtain or locate the cooking recipe and inspect its raw-fish requirement. Keep fish used in Alchemy separate from your meal ingredients.

For a specific fish, compare a short targeted session with the Auction House cost of the small quantity you need. Dedicated fishermen may prefer gathering a regular supply; an occasional cook may prefer buying it. Neither choice requires an invented universal income rate.
