Is worth learning?
Alchemy makes sense when you regularly use consumables or want to supply a group. A mana user can keep useful potions from the leveling process; a melee character can still benefit from stat elixirs, oils and combat consumables. Choose it for the items you expect to make and use, rather than a promise of easy gold.
The important Forever change is healing: ordinary healing potions belong to . Alchemy retains discolored healing potions, which restore health but inflict a harmful aftereffect. A familiar Classic recipe name is not enough to identify its profession or effect here. The Forever overview describes that split.
For a fresh character, Alchemy plus is the straightforward supply pairing. Buying an occasional finished potion may be cheaper than leveling an entire profession. If you choose a second crafting profession, arrange a reliable herb supply before spending gold on training.
trainers and rank requirements
You learn Alchemy from a profession trainer. Rank training raises your maximum skill; learning an individual recipe is a separate purchase. Train the next rank as soon as you qualify, before your current cap prevents further gains.
| Rank | Alchemy skill needed | Character level | New skill cap |
|---|---|---|---|
Apprentice | Starting rank | No extra level requirement listed | 75 |
Journeyman | 50 | 10 | 150 |
Expert | 125 | 20 | 225 |
Artisan | 200 | 35 | 300 |
These requirements follow the Forever leveling reference. At skill 150, for example, making more potions will not solve a missing Expert rank. Check both the rank and the recipe's own requirement.
Alliance Alchemy trainers
| Training stop | Trainer | Where to go |
|---|---|---|
Apprentice | Tel'Athir | Mage Quarter, Stormwind |
Journeyman | Lilyssia Nightbreeze | Mage Quarter, Stormwind |
Expert | Ainethil | Craftsmen's Terrace, Darnassus |
Artisan | Kylanna Windwhisper | Feathermoon Stronghold, Feralas |
Ironforge also has Vosur Brakthel for Apprentice and Tally Berryfizz for Journeyman in Tinker Town. Pick the city that fits your questing route; traveling across the world for an interchangeable early trainer rarely helps your leveling budget.
Horde Alchemy trainers
| Training stop | Trainer | Where to go |
|---|---|---|
Apprentice | Whuut | The Drag, Orgrimmar |
Journeyman | Yelmak | The Drag, Orgrimmar |
Expert | Doctor Herbert Halsey | The Apothecarium, Undercity |
Artisan | Rogvar | Stonard, Swamp of Sorrows |
Undercity alternatives include Martin Felben for Apprentice and Doctor Marsh for Journeyman. Bena Winterhoof teaches Journeyman on Thunder Bluff's Middle Rise. The Forever trainer directory lists these NPCs and the neutral Artisan trainer Master Mycologist Shurome at Emerald Sanctuary in Felwood. Check travel safety before choosing an Artisan destination on a low-level character.
Before leveling: recipe colors, vials and costs
An orange recipe guarantees a skill point under the normal recipe-color system. When a recipe turns yellow, gains become uncertain; green recipes are less reliable and gray recipes no longer raise skill. Treat the ranges below as switching targets, not guaranteed craft counts.
A cheaper yellow recipe can still be sensible if its ingredients cost much less. Compare cost per likely skill gain rather than cost per finished potion alone. Stop and check the profession window after a small batch so you can see when a recipe stops helping.
Buy the correct vial for the stage. Empty Vial, Leaded Vial and Crystal Vial are different ingredients, not interchangeable containers. Keep enough bag space for the finished items as well as the herbs, and reserve some gold for trainer recipes and rank upgrades.
The tables list materials for one craft, not a complete shopping list. Multiply them by the batch you actually intend to make, then allow for uncertain gains. This avoids buying a full 1–300 stockpile before you know your market or recipe access.
leveling 1–75: Apprentice
The early sequence below follows the staged route in the Icy Veins reference linked above. Recipe quantities are checked against the Forever spell database where linked.
| Skill target | Recipe | Materials per craft |
|---|---|---|
1–10 | 1 , 1 | |
10–55 | 1 , 1 , 1 | |
55–65 | 1 , 1 , 1 | |
65–75 | 2 , 1 , 1 |
Minor Defense and
Minor Mana Potion share Peacebloom and Empty Vials. That makes Silverleaf versus Mageroyal the useful price comparison when deciding whether to switch to Minor Mana earlier, from skill 25.
Do not mistake
Minor Fortitude for an instant healing potion: it increases maximum health. Keep consumables you will use, but do not turn every herb into excess stock just because the recipe is available.
Train Journeyman from skill 50 and character level 10. You can make that visit before finishing this table, so the cap does not interrupt the next batch.
leveling 75–150: Journeyman
| Skill target | Recipe | Materials per craft |
|---|---|---|
75–90 | 2 , 1 , 1 | |
90–120 | 1 , 2 , 1 | |
120–150 | 1 , 1 , 1 |
Mageroyal carries across the Wisdom and Lesser Mana stages. Briarthorn is used two at a time for Wisdom, so a small pile can disappear faster than expected. Save Stranglekelp for the mana-potion stage instead of selling it automatically.
There is a source discrepancy worth catching before shopping: older route tables list Leaded Vials for these recipes. The checked Forever tooltips for
Elixir of Wisdom and
Lesser Mana Potion both specify Empty Vial. Follow the recipe in your current client if it changes.
Train Expert at skill 125 and character level 20. You do not need to wait until 150, and doing so can leave you carrying ingredients for recipes that cannot award another point.
leveling 150–225: Expert
| Skill target | Recipe | Materials per craft |
|---|---|---|
150–160 | 1 , 1 , 1 | |
160–185 | 1 , 1 , 1 | |
185–205 | 1 , 1 , 1 | |
205–225 | 1 , 1 , 1 |
Stranglekelp remains useful through several stages. Goldthorn then connects the Agility and Greater Mana recipes, while Khadgar's Whisker becomes the new ingredient to obtain for the final row.
The recipe entries for
Mana Potion,
Elixir of Agility and
Greater Mana Potion confirm those per-craft materials. Keep the vial change in your budget.
Plan your Artisan trainer visit once you reach skill 200 and character level 35. If you are below that character level, you can prepare materials, but the rank requirement still controls progression beyond the Expert cap.
leveling 225–300: Artisan reference route
This later sequence comes from Wowhead's Forever 1–300 route, dated 10 October. It is a community reference, not a route personally tested for this guide. Icy Veins' 4 November reference stops at 225. Check recipe availability and colors in your client before buying the later materials.
| Skill target | Recipe | Materials per craft |
|---|---|---|
225–240 | 1 , 1 , 1 | |
240–260 | 1 , 1 | |
260–270 | 2 , 2 , 1 | |
270–300 | 1 , 1 , 1 |
The direct database entries confirm the ingredients for
Draught of Detect Undead,
Superior Mana Potion and
Major Discolored Healing Potion. Draught of Detect Undead is a tracking consumable; it is not a defensive potion.
The last row needs the discolored-potion unlock. Do that quest work before buying Plaguebloom. The route also describes continuing Superior Mana into the 280s as an alternative when Plaguebloom is expensive, but uncertain gains can erase the apparent saving. Compare a small batch first.
Crafting an item and using it have different requirements. Major Discolored Healing Potion requires character level 60 to drink, even if you can craft it earlier. Its tooltip says 75% of the instant healing is subsequently suffered as poison or disease damage. It needs a deliberate combat decision, not a place in your bags labeled “safe emergency heal.”
Unlocking discolored healing potions
For Alliance, the reference starts with Odd Child in the southern Westfall barn leading toward the Deadmines: My First Alchemy Set, then My First Real Potion. The listed supplies include 5 Empty Vials, 5 Peacebloom, 5 Silverleaf and 3 Murloc Eyes.
For Horde, begin with Rane Yorick in northern Silverpine Forest. The chain runs through Wild Hearts, Return to Quinn and Wild Eyes, with 3 Discolored Worg Hearts and 3 Murloc Eyes listed. Completing the unlock gives access through Apothecary Renferrel in the Sepulcher. These faction steps come from the same Wowhead leveling reference; check your quest log before collecting another full set.
New recipes, Merchant Favor and recipe sources
Not every Alchemy recipe comes from the trainer. Some are vendor purchases, quest rewards or drops. Before buying an expensive recipe at the Auction House, check whether it has a direct vendor source and whether you meet its skill or reputation requirement.
Forever also adds recipes sold for Merchant Favor. The overview lists Mender Potion at Alchemy 130, Spellblasting Potion at 135 and Frenzy Potion at 140, each with a listed cost of 45 Merchant Favor. Treat that currency as a separate budget from the herbs used to craft them.
Mender Potion's recipe data specifies 2 Wintersbite, 2 Firebloom and 1 Leaded Vial, producing two potions. It temporarily improves spell healing; the name does not mean it instantly restores health. Compare the cost for the whole batch, then divide by the two outputs when estimating an individual potion's material cost.
Keep a short list of recipes you actually need: one for your own combat consumables, one for leveling and one for selling. A recipe bought for collection may be worthwhile to you, but it should not quietly become part of a claim that the profession will pay for itself.
Philosopher's Stone and transmutes
The Philosopher's Stone is a tool used for transmutes, which convert one set of materials into another. The leveling reference places its recipe at Alchemist Pestlezugg in Gadgetzan, Tanaris, and lists Alchemy 225 to learn it. It is optional for the potion route above.
Transmute: Arcanite requires the stone and converts 1 Thorium Bar plus 1 Arcane Crystal into an Arcanite Bar. Having the inputs is not enough if the required tool is missing.
Check the live transmute cooldown before promising a buyer a delivery time. Old comments and guides can describe different cooldowns. A profitable conversion also needs the finished bar to sell for more than its inputs and selling costs; a cooldown does not guarantee a margin.
Camping: , and
Alchemy contributes more than items in a bag. Its camp features provide group utility and crafting access. Higher-tier objects can replace the early Mana Well rather than requiring a separate placement for each benefit.
| Camp feature | Alchemy skill required | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
20 | Mana regeneration; overlaps with | |
140 | A station for certain recipes, with the benefit | |
300 | A station for recipes that require it, with the benefit |
The item tooltips for
Mana Well,
Fermenter and
Alchemy Laboratory list those skill requirements and a shared one-hour cooldown. Learning a camp feature and meeting its skill requirement are separate checks; reaching 300 alone does not prove you already know the Laboratory recipe.
Blizzard's camping explanation describes building around a Basic Campfire and spending a minute sitting or crafting to gain benefits. Coordinate your contribution with the group, especially if someone already supplies the corresponding mana buff.
Before leaving town to craft at a camp, inspect the recipe's required station and make sure somebody can provide it. The existence of an Alchemy Laboratory does not make every Alchemy recipe available automatically.
Legacy Points from
Alchemy contributes to account progression as well as your current character's supplies. Blizzard's Legacy system overview awards a Legacy Point for a non-gathering primary profession at skill 150, 225 and 300.
Those milestones can give you a reason to continue even when you already know the potion you wanted. They do not remove the character-level requirements for Expert and Artisan training.
The profession-related Legacy choices include Working Overtime for skill-gain chances and Bartering for vendor costs. Read the current perk description before spending a point, then decide whether faster training or cheaper purchases matter more to your own plan.
, and material planning
Herbalism supplies most of the leveling route's reagents. Gathering your own herbs reduces immediate spending, but the herbs still have a sale value. When deciding whether a potion is profitable, count what you could have earned by selling those herbs.
is a secondary profession and can support oil ingredients without occupying another primary slot. It supplements Herbalism rather than replacing the herbs needed for the route. Check the oil recipe before deciding which fish to keep.
For each session, plan only the next skill bracket. Write down the missing herb, the vial type, the trainer visit and the intended use for the results. If the result is only vendor stock, compare another available recipe before committing your materials.
Making gold: price the whole batch
A popular recipe can still lose gold. Add the value of every herb and other reagent, include the vial, then compare that total with what you will actually receive from selling the output. Allow for the Auction House's charges and the chance of unsold stock.
For example, if a hypothetical batch costs 80 silver in ingredients and produces two items, its material cost is 40 silver each. A listing at 45 silver leaves only 5 silver per item before selling costs. Those are example numbers, not observed Forever market prices.
For leveling, also ask how many of those crafts will likely award a point. For personal use, compare the same material cost with buying the finished consumable. For selling, begin with a small batch so a price change does not leave your entire herb supply tied up in listings.
Common questions
Why am I stuck at 75, 150 or 225?
Check your trained rank first. The caps correspond to Apprentice, Journeyman and Expert. You need the next rank, its required Alchemy skill and the required character level before further crafting can raise the cap.
Can I make ordinary healing potions with Alchemy?
In Forever, ordinary healing potions are assigned to First Aid. Alchemy's discolored versions are a separate line with harmful aftereffects. Read the full item tooltip instead of following an unchanged Classic healing-potion route.
Which profession pairs best with Alchemy?
Herbalism is the practical starting choice when you want to collect your own main materials. A second craft can work if another character or group supplies herbs, or if buying them fits your budget. Compare all options in the WoW Forever professions guide.
Should I buy every recipe while leveling?
Buy the recipes needed for your next stage and the consumables you plan to use. Check the source of a vendor recipe before paying an Auction House markup, and separate collection spending from leveling costs.
Is this a personally tested 1–300 route?
No. This is a source-based guide checked on 6 November 2026. The 225–300 section is explicitly a dated community reference, and recipe materials are linked to Forever database entries. Follow changed client requirements and recipe colors before investing in a large batch.
