How many professions can you learn?
You can learn two primary professions and all three secondary professions: Cooking, Fishing and First Aid. The primary choices are three gathering skills and six crafting skills. Blizzard's Forever starter guide explains the profession interface, training and limits.
Open the Professions interface with K to inspect recipes, materials and skill. Trainers teach professions and higher ranks when your character and skill meet their requirements. Ask a city guard for directions when you need help finding one.
Choose a profession pair by what you want
These are our supply-based recommendations, not a performance ranking. The best pair for you depends on what you enjoy doing, which materials you can obtain and whether friends are sharing the work.
| Your main goal | Starting pair | Why consider it? |
|---|---|---|
Potions, elixirs and consumable preparation | + | Gather herbs for a recurring craft |
Weapons and heavy armor | + | Supply metal and stone for equipment |
Gadgets and explosives | + | Make the components your devices need |
Leather equipment and armor kits | + | Gather the leather and hides used by the craft |
Cloth equipment with an path | + | Give cloth and some crafted gear several possible uses |
Selling materials while exploring | Two gathering professions | Trade crafting output for resource gathering and sales |
Two crafting professions can work when you buy materials or have a reliable group supplier. Before choosing that route, price the ingredients for one realistic session. A theoretical endgame combination can be uncomfortable on a fresh character with very little gold.

Which professions suit your class?
Start with your goal rather than treating a class as a profession lock. A cloth caster interested in making equipment can compare Tailoring and Enchanting. A leather wearer may prefer Skinning and Leatherworking. A player who wants heavy equipment can compare Mining and Blacksmithing. A character focused on devices can choose Engineering regardless of those armor recommendations.
These are practical matches, not claims that a profession is mandatory or best in every encounter. Inspect the particular item's stats, level, binding and profession requirement before committing. You can use many tradeable goods made by somebody else; some personal crafts and Engineering devices have additional requirements.

What changes from an old Classic crafting plan?
Forever adds recipes, crafted-food bonuses, Blueprints and camping. Blizzard's Deep Dive recap describes more than 600 new recipes across professions and level ranges, including advanced Blueprints from dungeon bosses. That is a reason to check a Forever recipe source before copying an old material list.
A particularly useful distinction is normal healing potions: the checked Forever database assigns them to First Aid. Do not choose Alchemy solely to make the standard healing-potion line. The Alchemy and First Aid guides explain their different supply needs.
Legacy Points and profession perks
Crafting contributes to account progression. Blizzard awards a Legacy Point for reaching skill 150, 225 and 300 in each non-gathering primary profession. Gathering and secondary professions are not the same Tradeskills challenge. Each character spends the shared points independently, with a launch spending cap of 16.
The official Legacy explanation also lists profession perks: Working Overtime improves skill-up chances, Bountiful Harvest helps with scarce gathering resources, Master Chef can add Cooking output, and Luremaster can add fish. Dedicated Study is a daily tradeskill aid. Check the current tooltip before deciding how to spend points.
These perks can change the output or skill gains you get from a material list. Recheck the remaining supplies after a crafting batch instead of buying the entire next stage automatically. Our horizontal progression explainer covers the wider system.
How professions contribute to camping
A Basic Campfire supports three additional features, with one contributed by each player. Sitting or crafting there for at least a minute grants the relevant benefits. Corresponding camp and class buffs do not stack. The early features give you a reason to coordinate with the people at the fire rather than placing three objects without checking their effects.
The official camping article also describes later camp upgrades and how to obtain features. Each profession guide covers its own relevant contribution. Cooking creates the campfire itself; that is different from adding an object to someone else's fire.
Level professions without wasting materials
- Pick one useful output or next recipe stage.
- Check its exact skill, character, tool and station requirements.
- Reserve intermediate components and materials needed by another profession.
- Craft a small batch, then check the actual skill gains.
- Compare gathering, buying ingredients and buying the finished item before continuing.
The detail guides give concrete opening crafting paths where a checked Forever reference is available. They are not a claim that Crit Pick has tested every recipe or a fixed-cost 1–300 shopping list. Recipe colors, random skill gains, unlocks and prices can change the materials you need.
Which professions make the most gold?
There is no single answer supported by the evidence checked for this guide. Prices, demand, competition and your own time all matter. Compare actual sale proceeds with ingredient value and relevant selling costs. Materials you gather yourself still have a sale value, and an unsold listing is not income.
For a fresh character, choose a supply loop you can maintain. It is usually easier to evaluate one useful product or material than to copy an entire money-making plan without its prices or assumptions.
Sources and scope
Checked 6 November 2026. This is a source-based beginner guide, not a profession performance test. Blizzard supports the system rules; linked Forever community references support individual recipe routes and item details. The underpages distinguish those sources and call out material conflicts. No auction-price or gold-per-hour survey was performed.
