WoW Forever Blacksmithing guide: leveling, trainers and recipes

Level Blacksmithing in WoW Forever with trainers, recipe materials, grinding stones to save, specialization choices and camp crafting stations.

Read guide

Blacksmithing in World of Warcraft: Forever makes weapons, mail and plate armor, weapon improvements and crafting tools. This WoW Forever Blacksmithing guide covers trainers, leveling decisions, materials to keep, specialization choices and the Sharpening Wheel, Anvil and Master Forge camp features. Pair it with Mining when you want to supply your own metal and stone.

Is Blacksmithing worth it?

Choose Blacksmithing if making equipment is part of how you want to play. You can work toward a weapon upgrade, supply armor to friends or make tradeable items for sale. Those goals can justify different recipes: the cheapest skill point is not necessarily the item your character needs.

Warriors and Paladins who can equip the resulting plate armor have a direct reason to consider Blacksmithing, but check the actual upgrade first. Check armor type, required level, weapon proficiency and binding before crafting an upgrade. Being able to make plate does not mean your character can equip it. A recipe that raises Blacksmithing can still produce an item you cannot use.

Mining is the practical starting partner because it supplies bars and stone. Engineering shares some materials and offers gadgets, but taking two crafts means buying or receiving your mining materials. Shared ingredients do not create a supply of their own.

Sharpening stones and shield spikes

Blacksmithing also makes weapon improvements and shield spikes. The Iron Shield Spike attaches to a shield and deals damage when you block with it; its item requires Blacksmithing 150. Check the user's profession requirement as well as the recipe before making items for someone else.

Blacksmithing trainers and rank requirements

Train ranks before hitting the current cap. A rank upgrade raises the maximum Blacksmithing skill you can reach; individual recipes still have their own requirements and learning costs.

Brikk serves both factions. Plan the Artisan trip when you meet skill 200 and character level 35, rather than waiting until 225 with your next batch already in your bags. Early trainers elsewhere can save travel; use the linked directory when your questing route takes you away from these cities.

Blacksmith Hammer, anvil and trade supplies vendor

Keep a Blacksmith Hammer available and inspect the recipe's station requirement. An anvil and a forge are different things; standing beside one does not automatically meet every crafting or smelting requirement.

A trade supplies vendor is also worth checking before the Auction House. Flux and other vendor ingredients belong in the cost calculation, even when you gather the metal yourself. Leather, cloth, dyes and gems may become the ingredient that stops a batch.

For example, Bronze Warhammer uses 8 Bronze Bars, 1 Strong Flux and 1 Medium Leather per craft. Arriving with only bronze bars leaves you unable to complete it. Buying an extra stack of metal will not fix the missing leather.

Leveling Blacksmithing: choose the next useful skill range

An orange recipe normally guarantees a skill point. Yellow recipes can fail to raise skill, green recipes are less reliable and gray recipes no longer raise it. Compare the cost of likely skill gains, not just the cost of a single craft.

The following milestones summarize Wowhead's Forever leveling planner. They are a community reference checked on 6 November 2026, not a personally tested speed-leveling route. Follow your client if a recipe's availability or color differs.

Apprentice: skill 1–75

Skill targetRecipe milestone
1–30
Rough Sharpening Stone
30–65
Rough Grinding Stone
65–75
Copper Chain Belt

Save the grinding stones. Finished sharpening stones are weapon consumables; grinding stones are crafting components. Mixing those stacks up can mean selling the ingredient you need for the next recipe.

Journeyman: skill 75–150

Skill targetRecipe milestones in order
75–90
Silver Skeleton Key, then Rough Bronze Leggings
90–125
Runed Copper Belt; Heavy Sharpening Stone at 100–105; return to the belt, then leggings
125–140
Iron Buckle, then Bronze Warhammer
140–150
Patterned Bronze Bracers, then Green Iron Bracers

These grouped rows show the sequence, not a claim that each listed recipe lasts the whole bracket. The linked planner gives its individual switching points. Check the current profession window before buying a large batch for a grouped range.

At 125 you can also train Expert if your character is level 20. Training early keeps the next stage open.

Expert: skill 150–225

Skill targetRecipe milestones in order
150–165
Green Iron Bracers, then Green Iron Leggings
165–183
Green Iron Bracers
183–200
Heavy Mithril Gauntlet, then Golden Scale Bracers
200–215
Heavy Mithril Gauntlet and Mithril Plate Pants
215–225
Use an already learned recipe that still grants skill; see the breastplate conflict below

There are meaningful differences between community routes. Icy Veins schedules Patterned Bronze Bracers much earlier than Wowhead, while its own recipe database displays a skill entry starting at 120. This guide uses the later milestone and does not present the conflicting early step as guaranteed.

There is a second conflict: both route guides place Heavy Mithril Breastplate at 215–225, but the checked Forever spell entry requires Blacksmithing 230. Do not buy a 215–225 breastplate batch unless your current trainer actually offers it. Continue with an available recipe that still grants skill, or pause until you can check a suitable alternative.

If you already know a cheaper useful recipe, you do not have to follow a planner's default. Compare its color, ingredient availability and the use of the finished item before switching.

Materials per craft: bronze, iron and mithril

Use this table to price an individual recipe. These quantities are not a complete 1–300 shopping list and do not include the extra crafts that uncertain skill gains can require.

RecipeMaterials per craft
Patterned Bronze Bracers
5 Bronze Bars, 2 Coarse Grinding Stones
Bronze Warhammer
8 Bronze Bars, 1 Strong Flux, 1 Medium Leather
Golden Scale Bracers
5 Steel Bars, 2 Heavy Grinding Stones
Heavy Mithril Gauntlet
6 Mithril Bars, 4 Mageweave Cloth
Mithril Plate Pants
12 Mithril Bars
Heavy Mithril Breastplate, when learned
16 Mithril Bars

The individual Forever database entries support the bronze bracers, golden bracers, mithril gauntlets and mithril pants quantities. Read the top-level ingredients; expanded reagent trees also show materials used to make those ingredients, which you should not count twice.

For a concrete comparison, ten gauntlet crafts need 60 Mithril Bars and 40 Mageweave Cloth. Ten pants crafts need 120 Mithril Bars. The gauntlets save metal but consume cloth. Which is cheaper depends on both prices and the chance of gaining skill at your current level.

Ten Heavy Mithril Breastplate crafts consume 160 Mithril Bars. That is a batch calculation, not a promise of ten skill points or exactly ten finished items; the checked spell page shows two outputs. Check the current crafting result before pricing individual breastplates.

Blacksmithing can be gold-intensive when you buy those materials. Keep the money needed for your next rank and other character purchases separate from the amount you are prepared to spend on skill.

Shopping list: keep components for later recipes

Reserve two kinds of materials: ingredients for your next skill bracket and components needed by recipes further along. Put the latter in a separate stack or bank space so they survive a bag clear-out.

Coarse Grinding Stones go into Patterned Bronze Bracers; Heavy Grinding Stones go into Golden Scale Bracers. Decide how many final items you actually intend to make, then work backward from the recipe rather than crafting an arbitrary pile of components.

A useful shopping note has four entries: recipe, missing ingredients, station and destination for the result. “Vendor” is a valid destination for unwanted leveling gear, but compare its net cost with another recipe before making an entire batch.

Do not reserve your whole budget for metal. The leather in a weapon, cloth in gauntlets and flux in a recipe can determine whether you can finish the stage.

Artisan Blacksmithing: planning skill 225–300

The later stages need more caution. The checked Icy Veins guide still does not recommend a 225–300 route. Wowhead's planner does, but its later choices can involve expensive vendor plans and unusual materials. It is a reference to inspect, not a promise of the cheapest route on your realm.

Dense Weightstone is the planner's opening Artisan step. Its Forever recipe uses 1 Dense Stone, and the finished item improves a blunt weapon for 30 minutes. Check the weapon type before keeping it for personal use.

Later examples show why a fixed shopping list can become expensive:

Example craftMaterials per craft
Heavy Mithril Boots
14 Mithril Bars, 4 Thick Leather
Ebon Shiv
12 Mithril Bars, 6 Truesilver Bars, 2 Star Rubies, 1 Solid Grinding Stone, 2 Thick Leather
Bold Dirk
30 Thorium Bars, 4 Essences of Air, 10 Azerothium Bars, 4 Rugged Leather

These quantities come from the boots, Ebon Shiv and Bold Dirk entries. Ebon Shiv also needs its plan: the planner names Magnus Frostwake in Western Plaguelands as the vendor.

Before choosing a later recipe, confirm the plan source, required skill, specialization, station and ingredient supply. Buy one stage at a time. Do not substitute an old Classic Imperial Plate shopping list and assume its quantities still describe Forever.

Blacksmithing plans, Merchant's Favor and new armor families

Forever adds recipes beyond the basic trainer list. The Blacksmithing overview lists armor families with different names and ingredients, including Acolyte's, Crusader's, Guard's, Protector's and Veteran's Chain items.

The listed Acolyte's Chain Belt, for example, uses Copper Bars, Rough Grinding Stones, Pristine Leather and Strange Dust. That is a reason to inspect a new plan before spending currency: metal alone will not supply the craft, and the name alone does not tell you whether its stats fit your character.

Merchant's Favor plans are a separate purchase from normal trainer recipes. Check the Azeroth Commerce Authority or Durotar Supply and Logistics vendor for your faction, then verify the plan's currency cost, reputation and skill requirements. Buying a plan does not include its crafting materials.

The overview is community-maintained and still contains pre-launch wording. Use its recipe links as references, and check current vendor requirements in the game before paying an Auction House markup for a plan.

Armorsmith or Weaponsmith?

Blacksmithing includes specialization-gated recipes. Armorsmith focuses on its restricted armor plans; Weaponsmith has weapon plans, with further Axesmith, Hammersmith and Swordsmith branches represented in the recipe lists.

Choose from the specific item you want to make, then verify its full requirements. “I want to craft swords” is not enough if the chosen sword also needs a particular branch, rare plan or special station.

The Forever overview lists Dark Iron Plate among Armorsmith recipes and Dark Iron Pulverizer among Weaponsmith recipes. These are examples of restrictions, not a recommendation that either item is best for your build. The linked source's specialization-quest section is incomplete, so this guide does not invent a complete unlock chain or a switching price.

Crafting stations: Sharpening Wheel, Anvil and Master Forge

Camp featureBlacksmithing requiredBenefit
Sharpening Wheel
20
Strength buff; mutually exclusive with Strength of Earth Totem
Anvil
140
Places an anvil and includes the Sharpening Wheel benefit
Master Forge
300
Enables recipes requiring a Master Forge and includes the Sharpening Wheel benefit

The item tooltips for Sharpening Wheel, Anvil and Master Forge require a nearby campfire and list a shared one-hour cooldown. Higher-tier features can replace the Sharpening Wheel.

The Anvil blueprint teaches the placement recipe and lists 5 Bronze Bars, 2 Coarse Grinding Stones and 2 Medium Leather for a craft. Reaching skill 140 and learning that blueprint are separate steps.

Blizzard's camp rules explain gaining camp benefits by spending a minute sitting or crafting. Coordinate with the group before placing a Strength feature if the corresponding Shaman totem already supplies the buff.

Legacy Points and Blacksmithing Certification

Blizzard's Legacy system awards a point for reaching 150, 225 and 300 in a non-gathering primary profession. Blacksmithing therefore contributes to account progression alongside the equipment you make.

Working Overtime improves skill-gain chances, Bartering reduces vendor gold prices and Reagent Economy removes material costs from tier-one camp features. Read each perk before spending your points; a perk's effect on one expense does not make all crafting free.

The Blacksmithing Certification unlocks “the Blacksmith” title for the account. Characters displaying it must have 300 Blacksmithing. The overview lists a cost of 1,000 Merchant's Favor. Reaching 300 is a requirement, not an automatic grant of the purchased certification.

Selling equipment on the Auction House

Price the complete recipe before listing an item. Include the sale value of gathered bars, bought ingredients, the plan cost where relevant and selling charges. Materials you gathered yourself still have value because you could sell them instead.

If a hypothetical item costs 2 gold in materials and sells for 2 gold 20 silver, the apparent 20-silver difference is before selling costs and unsold listings. Those are example numbers, not measured Forever prices.

Start with a small batch of items people can actually equip at the level you are targeting. Compare the required level and armor or weapon type with the likely buyer, then check whether the market already has many similar listings. A leveling recipe does not guarantee buyers.

For your own character, compare crafting the upgrade with buying it. For a group, agree who provides the rare reagents before making a promise. Those decisions matter more than a generic claim that Blacksmithing is always profitable.

Quick checks before the next crafting session

  • Train the next rank when eligible; being stuck at 75, 150 or 225 often means the rank is missing.
  • Keep the Blacksmith Hammer and verify the required station.
  • Reserve grinding stones needed by later recipes.
  • Check the whole recipe cost, including leather, cloth, gems and flux.
  • Verify vendor-plan access before buying its expensive materials.
  • Compare all Forever professions if equipment crafting does not fit the way you want to play.

This is a source-based guide checked on 6 November 2026. Community recipe routes and database entries can disagree; the relevant uncertainty is stated beside the affected stage. No personal gameplay test or guaranteed gold return is claimed.
