WoW Forever Mining guide: ore, smelting and crafting partners

Start Mining in WoW Forever: tracking minerals, tools, ore versus bars, route planning and supplying Blacksmithing or Engineering.

Read guide

Mining is a primary gathering profession in WoW Forever. This guide explains how to start, train the next rank and keep useful materials. Mining supplies two large crafting paths: Blacksmithing and Engineering. Decide which one you want to feed before smelting everything in your bags. The recipe may require ore, bars, stone or a separate component; these are not interchangeable inputs.

Mining trainers, Apprentice Mining and later ranks

The Forever rank reference lists Apprentice Mining at a 75 cap. Journeyman, Expert and Artisan Mining raise it to 150, 225 and 300; training requires 50, 125 and 200 skill respectively. Learn the next rank before hitting the current limit.

Starting city options include Gelman Stonehand in Stormwind City, Geofram Bouldertoe in Ironforge, Makaru in Orgrimmar, Brek Stonehoof in Thunder Bluff and Brom Killian in Undercity. A full Mining trainer in town can teach smelting; junior Mining trainers in the starting areas do not teach that part. Check the available lessons before buying a smelting batch.

Training and finding ore are different tasks. If a smelting recipe is missing, return to the appropriate trainer instead of buying more ore. If a deposit is above your skill, check what you can gather now. Neither problem is solved simply by raising your character's combat level.

How to mine: Find Minerals, pick and bag space

Activate Find Minerals to track ore, keep the Mining Pick available and read the deposit's required skill. A minimap marker is only a location; it does not promise you can gather the ore node yet. Loot the resource after interacting and check whether the deposit still has another use available.

Before entering a cave, consider the enemies as well as the mining veins. A dense-looking map can be slower if you spend most of the session fighting or recovering. Keep a return route and enough inventory space for stone and gems, not merely empty slots for raw ore.

Learn Mining and prepare for your first ore trip

After learning Mining, activate Find Minerals and keep the required Mining Pick with you. Interact with a deposit when your skill meets its requirement. The checked Icy Veins Forever Mining reference also describes Smelting at a forge.

Before setting out, check:

  • Find Minerals is active.
  • Your Mining Pick is available.
  • You have enough empty bag space.
  • You have identified the next recipe and its ingredients.

If you arrive at a deposit and cannot gather it, read the requirement instead of assuming your character level is high enough.

Ore, bars and stone have different jobs

ResourceDecision before using or selling it
Ore
Does your next recipe need ore directly, or a smelted bar?
Bars
Which exact metal and quantity does the craft require?
Stone
Is it reserved for grinding stones or blasting powder?
Gems and rarer finds
Is there a known recipe you want to supply before selling?

If selling, compare ore and bar prices after accounting for the smelting recipe's yield and any additional materials. A higher sale price per bar does not automatically mean a better return per ore.

Level Mining through material tiers

The community reference describes the familiar progression from Copper through Tin, Iron, Mithril and Thorium. Treat that as orientation rather than a complete Forever map. Check the actual deposit's skill requirement and the material your next craft needs before traveling to a later zone.

A useful route stays within terrain you can handle and brings you back to a town or transport point. Cliffs and mines may contain deposits, but a crowded cave can cost more time in fighting and recovery than the ore is worth to your plan.

Blacksmithing or Engineering?

Blacksmithing turns your metal supply toward weapons, armor and equipment improvements. Engineering turns it toward components, devices and consumables. Start with the output you want, then reserve its inputs before selling surplus.

Stone is a good example: a smith may need grinding stones, while an engineer wants blasting powder. Clearing your bag of stone because it looks less valuable than ore can interrupt either route.

Gathering for gold

Choose a short test session and record the resources you actually bring back. Compare sale value after relevant costs with the time spent traveling, fighting and gathering. Until you do that, a promised gold-per-hour number is somebody else's situation.

Buying some missing bars can be sensible even on a miner. If one small purchase finishes an important craft, compare it with the time needed to find that exact deposit. Self-sufficiency is an option, not a rule that every ingredient must be gathered personally.

Mining camp features: Lodestone, Rock Garden and Molten Foundry

The Forever Mining reference names Lodestone at skill 20, Rock Garden at 140 and Molten Foundry at 300. Lodestone grants melee Attack Power and overlaps with Blessing of Might. Rock Garden adds a mining node over time; Molten Foundry provides a station for recipes that require it. These are community-reference details; Blizzard's checked camping sample table does not list Mining's object.

If you take Mining primarily to support a craft, a good next-session goal is enough material for one useful recipe stage—not a bank full of metal with no planned use. ## Smelt Copper, Smelt Tin and Smelt Bronze

Smelting can give a skill point as well as convert ore into bars. Use the recipe's current color and requirement to judge whether it still advances you. Learn the relevant recipe and stand at the required forge; owning Copper Ore does not itself create Copper Bars.

The leveling reference begins with copper, then tin and bronze. Bronze consumes copper and tin bars together, so reserve the copper before selling your first output. Compare local ore prices before adopting a smelting route; a published low-cost estimate does not describe every realm.

Smelt Silver and later recipes

Silver Ore and a Silver Bar have different possible buyers. Before choosing Smelt Silver or another later conversion for skill gains, check its training requirement, recipe color, input cost and resulting bar value. A rare ore priced above the finished bar can make an otherwise convenient skill-up expensive.

Keep the same habit for iron and later metals. Smelting a full stack because a recipe is available may use an input your next craft needs raw. Decide which form your actual Blacksmithing or Engineering recipe consumes before converting everything.

Iron Ore, Mithril and Small Thorium: read the deposit requirement

The deposit overview lists Tin Vein at 65, Silver Vein at 75, Iron Deposit at 125, Mithril Deposit at 175 and Small Thorium Vein at 245. Use these as gathering thresholds, not as a promise that any one circuit will deliver every point between them.

Material stageWhat to check
Copper Ore and Rough Stone
Starter deposits and your first crafting inputs
Tin Ore and Silver Ore
Whether to gather or finish a small smelting stage
Iron Ore
Access to Iron Deposit and the next bar recipe
Mithril
Keep useful Solid Stone and inspect gems such as Star Ruby
Small Thorium
Required gathering skill, safer access and Dense Stone demand

Choose terrain that fits your character

Elwynn Forest and other starting zones serve a different purpose from later areas such as Arathi Highlands, Alterac Mountains or the Burning Steppes. Check the deposit types and enemies before traveling. A familiar low-risk loop can be more useful than a distant route when you only need a small missing stack.

For later trips to Un'Goro Crater, Eastern Plaguelands or Western Plaguelands, plan around both survival and the specific material. Access to a zone does not establish access to its ore. If competition leaves your route empty, change the activity or timing instead of assuming another fixed lap will restore the advertised output.

Dark Iron and Blackrock Depths

Treat Dark Iron as a separate project with its own deposit and smelting requirements. A recipe using Dark Iron is not supplied by an ordinary Iron Bar. Before arranging a trip around Blackrock Depths or another difficult destination, verify the exact material and learning requirements of the craft you want.

Separate an equipment goal from ordinary Mining leveling. You may want a particular ore for a craft without needing it for your next skill point. Buying a small amount can be sensible when the alternative is a long specialized trip that does not fit the rest of your session.

Heavy Thorium Bar, scarce minerals and new recipes

The new-material reference identifies Heavy Thorium Bar, Azerothium Bar and Legionite Bar. Smelt Heavy Thorium requires a Molten Foundry. Pyrite, Bauxite and Pitchblende are separate scarce materials; do not vendor unfamiliar reagents without checking the recipe you plan to make.

The reference leaves gathering locations for the new ore incompletely documented. This guide does not turn an unconfirmed location into a farming route. Compare the current item and recipe information before buying a large speculative supply for later level-60 equipment.

Mining Legacy perks and equipment boosts

A Mining bonus can help reach a deposit's requirement; a Legacy perk has its own scope. Inspect their actual descriptions before treating either as guaranteed extra ore. If considering a Goblin Mining Helmet, also check equipment requirements and whether that character can use it.

For a perk such as Bountiful Harvest, read which scarce materials and gathering activities it affects. A drop-rate improvement is not a guarantee that the next node contains a rare reagent, and it does not replace training your profession rank. Spend around the gathering you actually do rather than a promised gold-per-hour figure.

Is Mining worth a primary profession slot?

Mining can feed Blacksmithing or Engineering directly. If you only need an occasional bar, compare buying that material with keeping the entire gathering profession. If gathering fits your regular exploration, record a short session's actual useful stock and costs before deciding how much time to invest.

Keep a few concrete goals: the next training rank, enough metal for a needed craft, or a campsite blueprint. A common mining node from Rock Garden can supplement a camp routine, but it is a different project from running an outdoor ore circuit. Budget each around what you want to make next.
