GW2 Flamethrower Scrapper build guide
A low-intensity power Engineer build for solo open world - the Flamethrower Scrapper turns its own damage into barrier, so you camp Hammer and Flamethrower and barely dodge.
The GW2 Flamethrower Scrapper is the engineer's low-intensity open-world bruiser. You camp Hammer and the Flamethrower kit, and because dealing strike damage converts straight into barrier through Impact Savant, you barely need to dodge — just keep the cone burning and the hammer swinging. It is tanky, simple and relentless; the trade is short range and cleave over single-target burst.
Equipment
Full Berserker with Dragon on the rings and accessories — a pure power, precision and ferocity setup, no condition or boon duration to chase. Engineer wears medium armour, so the named ascended Berserker set is the Leatherworker's Zojja's pieces. Your trinkets are stat-selectable ascended, so pick Berserker on the amulet and back and Dragon on the rings and accessories. Exotic Berserker is within a few percent and fine for all of open world.
Engineer has no weapon swap, and this build does not want one. Hammer is your only weapon; the Flamethrower and Elite Mortar Kit are your other two skill bars. The Hammer runs two sigils — Superior Sigil of Force for flat damage and Superior Sigil of Impact for extra damage against disabled foes, and you disable constantly. If the short range grates, some players keep a Rifle for running between packs and drop to the kits on contact.
Relic alternativessustain
Relic of Fireworks is the damage pick. There is one common survival swap.
How the build works
One picture. You deal damage, that damage becomes barrier, so you stop dodging and just keep attacking — and disabling foes tops up the boons that make you hit harder.
Impact Savant is the engine. A share of every strike you land comes back as barrier. On a power build that is a constant wall of health you did not have to heal for — which is why dodging becomes optional and you can simply camp your two skill bars. Rune of the Scholar rewards staying healthy — bonus damage while your health is high — and Impact Savant keeps that barrier up, so the tankiness and the damage feed each other.
Skills
Two of your three utility slots are kits — the Flamethrower and the Elite Mortar Kit — so your five-skill bar is really twenty skills. Medic Gyro is your heal; Blast Gyro and Shredder Gyro bring wells for damage, superspeed and crowd control; and the Flamethrower is where you live for clumps of enemies.
Healing skill
Medic Gyro is your healing skill — a well that heals you and nearby allies over a few seconds. Every engineer utility also has a unique toolbelt skill, and Blast Zone blasts your heal’s toolbelt skill for you automatically, so pressing heal drops a free blast finisher for extra Might or healing. On top of the barrier from Impact Savant, that is a lot of low-effort sustain for one button.

Traits
Three lines: Firearms for critical damage, Alchemy for sustain and the disable payoff, and Scrapper for barrier, superspeed and the boons that turn into damage.
How the engine actually works
Firearms is your damage multiplier. High Caliber gives extra critical chance against anything at close range — which, on a hammer-and-flamethrower build, is everything — and No Scope turns those crits into Fury, which becomes Ferocity, so your criticals hit harder the more you land.
Heavy Metal then raises your critical chance and critical damage against foes below a health threshold, so your damage ramps as targets drop. It is an execute trait, and it is why packs melt once they are softened up. Some flamethrower builds run Juggernaut in this slot instead, for pulsing Stability and Might while the kit is out; this one takes No Scope and Heavy Metal for the extra critical damage, since Might is already covered elsewhere.
Alchemy is sustain and setup. Health Insurance boosts the healing you receive, and Blast Zone drops a blast finisher whenever you use your heal's toolbelt skill — free might or healing off a field.
The key trait is Equal and Opposite Reaction: every time you disable an enemy you gain Quickness and Stability. Weave your crowd control in on cooldown and you keep both up almost permanently — the Quickness speeds your rotation, and the Stability is what powers the Scrapper line.
Scrapper turns Stability into damage. Mass Momentum grants Might while you have Stability, Applied Force converts stacked Might into bonus power, and Object in Motion increases your strike damage for every boon you are holding — Stability, Swiftness and Superspeed all count.
And underneath it all sits Impact Savant, the Scrapper grandmaster minor, converting a share of your strike damage into barrier — the passive that makes this build so hard to kill. The exact major picks come from the build code above; decode it in-game to confirm.
Rotation
There is barely a rotation — you camp two skill bars and press the good buttons off cooldown. The priority: keep crowd control flowing (for Quickness and Stability), stay on the Flamethrower for clumps, and drop to Hammer for cleave and reflects.
Blast the lightning field. Thunderclap (Hammer 5) drops a lightning field — whirl Electro-whirl (Hammer 2) inside it, and Thunderclap also procs Relic of Fireworks for a strike-damage burst.
Combos and crowd control
Crowd control is your damage. Every disable feeds Quickness and Stability through Equal and Opposite Reaction, and Stability is what the whole Scrapper line runs on. Do not sit on your CC — spend it on cooldown.
Flamethrower for packs, Hammer for single targets. Flame Jet is a short-range cone that shreds clumps at mid range; Air Blast (Flamethrower 3) reflects projectiles and knocks foes back, and Napalm (Flamethrower 5) lays a fire field you can blast for Might. On a single target the Hammer’s melee cleave and its reflects (Electro-whirl, Shock Shield) do more. Between them the Hammer and Flamethrower are your main damage source, and the boons your crowd control hands out are the damage modifiers on top — the strong area damage and crowd control the kit is known for.
Barely dodge. Impact Savant keeps a wall of barrier up as long as you are dealing damage, so your job is to keep attacking, not to reposition. Save your actual dodges for the big telegraphed hits.
The honest verdict
What it is best at, and what it is not:
This is the comfort pick of the Scrapper builds — low-intensity, forgiving, low on mechanical complexity, extremely tanky, and it never has to stop attacking. It gives up the permanent-Quickness group support of the meta Power Hammer Scrapper and the raw single-target of a burst build. Take it to relax through open world, hold a spot in a meta event, and never think about your health bar.
Best for: solo open world, meta-event trains, and anyone who wants a build they can play tired. Not for: speed-killing a lone champion or topping a damage meter.

Questions
Is Flamethrower Scrapper good for solo open world?
Yes — it is one of the most relaxing open-world builds in the game. Dealing strike damage converts into barrier through Impact Savant, so you rarely have to dodge; you camp Hammer and the Flamethrower and keep attacking. The trade-off is range and single-target speed: Flame Jet is short-ranged, and a lone champion takes a while, but packs and meta-event trash melt.
Is the Flamethrower Scrapper a power or condition build?
Power. It runs full Berserker with Dragon trinkets — power, precision and ferocity — and its damage is strike damage from the Hammer and Flamethrower, boosted by crits from Firearms and boons through Object in Motion. There is a separate off-meta Celestial condition elixir Scrapper, but this is not it.
Why do I barely need to dodge?
Impact Savant, the Scrapper grandmaster minor, turns a share of your strike damage into barrier. As long as you are attacking, you generate a wall of temporary health, so most open-world hits land on barrier instead of your health bar. Save real dodges for big telegraphed attacks.
How does crowd control help my damage?
Equal and Opposite Reaction grants Quickness and Stability every time you disable a foe. The Quickness speeds your attacks, and the Stability feeds Mass Momentum for Might, Applied Force for bonus power, and Object in Motion for more strike damage per boon. Weaving CC in on cooldown is a damage rotation, not just utility.
Do I need ascended gear, or is exotic enough?
Exotic Berserker is completely fine for all of open world and much cheaper. Ascended is a small stat bump plus the agony resistance fractals want, which open world never asks for. Build the exotic set, play the build, and only chase the ascended Zojja's pieces if you want the last few percent.
Flamethrower or Hammer — which do I actually use?
Both. Camp the Flamethrower's Flame Jet cone on clumps of enemies, and drop to Hammer for single targets and for its cleave, reflects and lightning field. The Elite Mortar Kit is your ranged answer for when you cannot stand in melee.
Can I use this to farm the Halloween Labyrinth?
Partly. The Scrapper chassis tags well with the Mortar and the Hammer's AoE, and its Superspeed helps the whole squad move — but Flame Jet itself is too short-ranged to tag efficiently on laps. For a dedicated Labyrinth farm you lean on Mortar and grenades over the Flamethrower. It works; it is just not optimised for it.
About this build
The Flamethrower Scrapper is a power Engineer build for solo open world in Guild Wars 2. It runs full Berserker gear with Dragon trinkets — power, precision and ferocity — across the Firearms, Alchemy and Scrapper specialisations, with a Hammer plus the Flamethrower and Elite Mortar kits. The build is built around Impact Savant, which converts a share of your strike damage into barrier, so you hold your ground and keep attacking instead of dodging. Crowd control fuels Quickness and Stability, which in turn become Might and bonus strike damage. It is a low-intensity, high-sustain build that trades range and single-target burst for comfort and cleave.
