Celestial Reaper

The celestial Reaper is the GW2 reaper open world build for players who would rather farm than speedrun. It freezes everything it touches, and the freezing is what does the damage — chill is the currency this build spends, and five of its nine traits pay out on it. One set of Celestial gear covers condition and strike damage at once. It is not the fastest Reaper; it is the one that keeps going.

Equipment

One set of Celestial across all fifteen slots. Celestial gives a share of every attribute, which is what you want when your damage is split between bleeding from chill and direct hits from a melee set. Necromancer wears light armour. Exotic Celestial is fine — ascended is a few percent and the agony resistance you only need in fractals.

Armor · Rune of Leadership 6

Rune of Leadership pays twice here. Up to sixteen points to every attribute — on Celestial there is no dump stat to waste it on — plus ten percent boon duration, which extends the might from Chilling Victory and the boons from Dread and Chilled to the Bone.

Trinkets · Celestial 6
Weapons · Sword/Sword and Staff 3

A Reaper without a greatsword. Celestial wants many small hits that each carry a condition, not a few enormous ones, and the dual swords apply faster than the greatsword's heavy swings. The greatsword is the better weapon on a power Reaper — this is not one. Staff earns its slot with marks rather than damage.

Relic and sigilswhy these ones

Two upgrades plug straight into the chill engine rather than just adding numbers.

How the build works

Most Reaper builds treat chill as crowd control. This one treats it as a damage type. Deathly Chill makes chill deal damage over time, applying bleeding on top of the slow — and once that is in place, every other chill source on the bar turns into a damage source.

Bitter Chill adds three stacks of vulnerability whenever you chill, so the target takes more of everything that follows. Chilling Darkness turns any blind into a chill, so even your defensive presses feed the engine. Chilling Nova makes critical hits on a chilled target explode and chill everything next to it. And Chilling Victory hands you might and one percent life force per strike on a chilled foe — which means the build generates its own resource without spending a trait line on resource generation.

Skills

Two of these do more work than their tooltips suggest. Chilled to the Bone is the largest chill button in the game: it freezes every enemy around you and grants boons for each one caught — on a build where chill is a damage type, that is an area attack, not crowd control. Spectral Grasp is the setup that makes it worth pressing, pulling a pack together first. The rest is defensive by design, and even the defence feeds the engine: Well of Darkness blinds, and blind triggers Chilling Darkness.

Skill bar 5
Skill alternativesnone published

Honest gap: the source for this build publishes no alternatives at all — no skill swaps, no gear variants, no rune options. We are not going to invent some. If you want a flex slot, the obvious candidate is the third utility, and you will be experimenting rather than following a tested list.

Traits

Three lines, and five of the nine picks exist to make chill hurt. The gold line runs through the selection in each.

Trait lines 3

The sustain question, answered honestly

This build skips Soul Reaping, the line that improves Shroud and life force generation. That sounds like a problem, and on paper it is: Shroud comes back slower than you expect, and the temptation is to press it the moment it lights up.

Do not. There is a line of fine print in Parasitic Contagion that decides how this build is played. It heals you for a percentage of your condition damage — and healing will not occur while life force replaces health. The lifesteal is switched off while you are in Shroud.

So this Reaper heals while it applies conditions, not while it hides. Shroud is a damage window, not a retreat. Use it as a second health bar and you turn off your healing at exactly the moment you decided you were in trouble. Bank life force with Chilling Victory and Spiteful Fortitude, spend it deliberately, come back out to heal.

What Lingering Curse actually gives you here

Lingering Curse does two things: it raises condition damage by a flat amount, and it extends conditions applied by scepter skills. This build carries Sword, Sword and Staff. There is no scepter. Half of that grandmaster is dead text on this bar — what you get is the flat condition damage, which is still strong on Celestial, but it is not the scepter trait people remember.

The opener is fear, not chill. Dread pays out when you apply fear, and fear is why the rotation starts on Staff 5. Reaper's Mark fears, Dread switches on, and only then does Chillblains start the chill engine.

Rotation

Three phases and a rule. Open at range with the Staff marks, swap to the swords, and enter Shroud when you have banked life force and want the target dead — not when the button lights up. The lane underneath tracks what you are holding. Press play, or click any step.

Swap to Staff when you intend to enter Shroud soon after, so you are not stuck at range with the swords on cooldown. Against a pack the loop is more forgiving than it sounds, because Chilling Nova spreads chill on every critical hit and the marks are area damage by default. Against a single champion it is slower — that is the honest trade.

The sword skills have a second activation that sacrifices your own health. On a build whose healing switches off in Shroud, that is not a small footnote. Under pressure, let the first press stand and skip the follow-up.

The honest verdict

What it is good at, and what it is not:

Take it to farm, not to clear fast. The damage arrives over time and the ramp is real: trash dies before the bleeding stacks matter, so on easy content you are paying for sustain you never needed. It punishes Shroud misuse harder than most Reaper builds, because your healing is off while you are in there and Shroud returns slowly without Soul Reaping. And it is a melee build without a greatsword's reach, so anything that forces you out of range interrupts the damage and the healing at once.

What you get in return is a build that sustains itself out of its own damage through two separate lifesteal sources, holds up on long fights and champions, and never asks you to change gear.

Build code

Paste this into an empty build template slot in-game. The traits and skills on this page were decoded from this exact code and checked against the official Guild Wars 2 API. The code carries skills, traits and weapons only — gear, stat prefixes, runes and sigils are not in it.

Questions

Is Reaper good for open world in GW2?

Yes, and it is one of the most forgiving picks in the game. The Necromancer has one of the two highest health pools and a shroud that absorbs mistakes, and Reaper adds melee cleave and chill on top. This particular build leans into sustain rather than speed, which suits solo play, champions and long events better than clearing trash.

Celestial or Viper for Reaper?

Viper if you want maximum condition damage and you are confident dodging. Celestial if you want one gear set that never needs changing and enough toughness and vitality to stay in the fight. This build is built for the second case: its damage is split between chill-driven bleeding and sword strikes, and Celestial feeds both. A set that feeds only one leaves half the kit underpowered.

Do I need Soul Reaping on Reaper?

Not for this build, and leaving it out is deliberate. Soul Reaping improves Shroud and life force generation, but the chill traits already return life force through Chilling Victory and Spiteful Fortitude. The cost is that Shroud comes back slower, so you save it for damage instead of using it as an escape.

What stats should a Reaper use in open world?

Celestial for this build, on every slot including both weapon sets. Exotic is enough to start. If you are still levelling, take whatever drops and rank the stats rather than chasing a named prefix.

Why no greatsword on this Reaper?

Because Celestial rewards many small hits that each carry a condition rather than a few enormous ones, and the dual swords apply faster than the greatsword's heavy swings. The greatsword is the better weapon on a power Reaper built around Berserker stats. This build is not that, so it trades the signature weapon for application speed.

Should I use spear instead of staff?

Spear is a real option and some Reaper builds have moved to it. This one keeps Staff because its marks provide the fear that starts the loop and a condition transfer the spear does not replace. If you prefer the spear, expect to rebuild the opener around a different fear source.

About this build

The celestial Reaper is a GW2 reaper open world build for solo play and farming: one set of Celestial gear, Sword and Sword with Staff, and the Spite, Curses and Reaper trait lines. Chill is its damage type rather than its crowd control — Deathly Chill turns every application of chill into bleeding, Bitter Chill adds vulnerability, Chilling Darkness turns blinds into chill, Chilling Nova spreads it on critical hits, and Chilling Victory returns might and life force for striking chilled foes. Sustain comes from two condition-driven lifesteal sources, Parasitic Contagion and Relic of the Biomancer, rather than from sitting in Shroud — Parasitic Contagion is switched off while life force replaces health, which is why Shroud here is a damage window and not a retreat. It is a farmer's build with a slow ramp and no ranged answer, and it holds up on long fights and champions where staying alive is the damage.

Traits and skills decoded from the in-game build template and verified against the official Guild Wars 2 API, which also supplies the icons; item, rune and relic effects read from /v2/items. Build based on GuildJen's Celestial Reaper open world build, last updated there 31 July 2026; GuildJen publishes no patch stamp. Hardstuck's Booster Reaper is a different build — Soul Reaping, greatsword and power-leaning food — and the two should not be mixed. Builds shift with every balance patch; last checked 17 August 2026. Guild Wars 2 and all associated names are the property of ArenaNet and NCSOFT.
