Shogun 2 Complete Edition: why it was pulled from sale
Shogun 2 Complete Edition was pulled from sale. What happened, whether you keep access, how it differs from the original and what happens to mods.
Updated 16 October 2026 · Availability explainer
Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition launched on 13 October 2026. Two days later, SEGA and Creative Assembly announced that they were working with storefronts to take it off sale while they investigate its problems. On 16 October, its Steam page says the game is no longer available to buy. Existing owners can still access and play it.
If you came here looking for a new Shogun game, this is an updated edition of Shogun 2, rather than Shogun 3. It bundles the original campaigns with technical changes, extra playable factions and a different mod platform. The immediate question is what happens to those versions now.
Why was Shogun 2 Complete Edition removed from sale?
SEGA and Creative Assembly acknowledged player feedback and said the release had not met their quality expectations. Their 15 October statement sets out two steps: remove the Complete Edition from sale and bring back the original while they investigate with their development partner.
The statement does not give a return date, a patch schedule or a complete list of fixes. It also does not establish the cause of every problem players have reported. An announcement that improvements are being investigated is not a finished patch.
Steam displayed an Overwhelmingly Negative rating for the Complete Edition at this check. That describes player reviews on Steam; it is not a Crit Pick review score. We have not tested the final build, so this page explains the release and its current status rather than offering a hands-on verdict.
Can you still play it, or buy the original Shogun 2?
If you already bought the Complete Edition, SEGA and Creative Assembly say you keep access. Removing a game from sale does not mean they are taking it out of existing owners' libraries.
The original Shogun 2 has a purchase option again on the Steam listing checked on 16 October. That is worth separating from the Complete Edition: these are different versions, and the newer release's removal is not a shutdown of the original.
Availability can vary between regions and storefronts. The confirmed purchase status here is Steam's current listing. The original launch FAQ still describes the earlier plan to stop selling the original separately, so that part of the FAQ needs to be read alongside the newer statement and current store page.
What changes in Shogun 2 Complete Edition?
Campaigns and multiplayer
The package includes Shogun 2, Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai, alongside the associated DLC. The launch FAQ excludes the Blood Pack because of age ratings. Those campaigns cover different periods of Japanese warfare, so the package reaches beyond a single campaign with new textures.
You still combine turn-based empire building in feudal Japan with real-time tactical battles. You build alliances on the campaign map and command samurai armies on the battlefield. Multiplayer includes co-op and competitive campaigns, Avatar Conquest mode and custom battles with up to eight players. It is the same underlying Total War game with a revised technical foundation and additional options.
Technical upgrades
The technical changes include a 64-bit upgrade, interface scaling for 1440p and 4K displays, revised visuals and modernised controls. Japanese and Chinese voice acting and text localisation are also part of the edition. Those are advertised features, rather than proof that the launch performs better on your PC.
New factions and campaign options
Creative Assembly's detailed changes list adds several more practical differences. A Realm Divide slider lets you adjust the mechanic's difficulty or disable it. Quick Deal shows how likely factions are to accept different diplomatic deals. A bird's-eye battle view gives you a wider overview, and more than 50 minor factions have official playable support across the campaigns.
For a returning player, the relevant comparison is therefore quite specific: do you want those interface and campaign options enough to switch versions once the problems are addressed? A longer feature list alone does not settle that.
Do original Shogun 2 mods work in Complete Edition?
No. SEGA's FAQ says mods made for the original Shogun 2 are incompatible with the Complete Edition. The new edition uses integrated Mod.io support, while original-game mods remain unchanged.
If you are returning for a particular mod, check which version it supports before installing anything. Owning the Complete Edition does not turn an old mod collection into a compatible one. Keeping the original available matters for players whose campaigns depend on those mods.
Was the Complete Edition a free upgrade?
No. The launch offer gave Steam owners of the original a limited 75% discount on a separate purchase. The published offer ran from 13 October to 12 November 2026. Original owners were also promised missing legacy DLC for the original game at no additional cost.
Those are separate benefits: receiving old DLC does not mean you received the updated edition for free. With the Complete Edition off sale, the old discount dates should not be treated as a promise that you can buy it now, or that the offer will be extended when it returns. The 15 October statement does not answer that question.
What should returning players do now?
Check your library before spending anything. If you already have the original and the mods you want, you can assess that version on its own terms. If you bought the Complete Edition, you retain access, but the announced investigation gives no date by which specific problems will be fixed.
For anyone waiting to buy the updated edition, the useful next milestone is a concrete update: what was fixed, when it returns to sale, and what happens to the original-owner offer. We will update this page when those details are confirmed.
