Cancelled, bought back, shipped
Riot killed Hytale in June 2025. Its co-founder bought the rights back, re-hired 30 developers, rolled the engine back to the version that actually worked, and shipped it into Early Access on 13 January 2026. Here is what you get for $19.99 — and what you don’t.

The game that got cancelled and came back
Hytale is the only game of its size to be killed by its owner and then bought back by the person who made it. The dates are the story.
Riot shuts down Hypixel Studios and ends development after nearly a decade. Rising technical complexity, slow progress, and a major engine reboot that never paid off. For most games, this is where the story stops.
Hypixel co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme announces publicly that he is trying to buy Hytale back from Riot.
Reacquisition confirmed. Hypixel Studios owns 100% of Hytale, repurchased from Riot. Thirty developers are re-hired. Funding is a ten-year personal commitment from Collins-Laflamme and members of the original core team — not a publisher’s budget with a milestone gate.
The game returns from the dead in public, with the decision that made it possible: go back to the legacy engine and the original vision.
Three editions announced. Twenty-six days from store to playable.
Windows, macOS and Linux, simultaneously. Riot Games publicly congratulated the team on the launch — six months after cancelling it.
Why the legacy engine matters
Here is the decision that made the revival work, and almost nobody explains it.
The engine reboot is what killed Hytale under Riot. The team had moved off the original engine, and complexity ran away from them until the project was no longer viable. When Collins-Laflamme got the rights back, the call was to return to the legacy engine and the original vision — the version that actually worked, the one from the 2018 trailers people had been waiting seven years for.
That is why Hytale exists today instead of remaining a cautionary tale. It also sets your expectations correctly: this is not a next-generation technical showcase. It is a game that got shipped by abandoning the ambitious rewrite and finishing the thing that already ran. That trade bought accessibility on a wide range of PCs, and it bought a release date.
What Hytale actually is
A voxel sandbox — a block-built world you can dig into and rebuild — wearing a structured adventure RPG. That has been the pitch since 2018, and the Early Access build delivers the core of it: exploration, combat, building, minigames, and community-run servers.
A procedurally generated world
Orbis is procedurally generated: a set of zones with a genuine variety of biomes and environments, which critics have singled out as one of the game’s real strengths. There are dungeons to descend, rare resources to bring home, and secrets placed rather than scattered.
One honest gap: Hytale does not have the extremely deep caverns that define a lot of Minecraft’s underground. If descending forever is your thing, that thing is elsewhere.
Progression, not just persistence
Where Hytale separates itself from a pure sandbox is progression. It wants you to advance, not merely survive:
- Gridless crafting. No memorising recipe shapes — you select recipes directly from workstations.
- Memories. Discover a new creature or location and you collect a memory, which unlocks crafting recipes. Exploration is the tech tree.
- Cosmetic customisation. Character appearance is yours to shape, across every edition.
NPCs, factions and combat
- NPCs follow daily routines. Creatures and characters keep schedules, and factions track reputation — how you behave changes how the world treats you.
- Combat has weapon variety and abilities, rather than one swing for everything.
- Building tools aim at complex structures and custom designs, not just stacking cubes.
Hytale editions and price
Three versions, all one-time purchases. There is no free version and no trial.
The differences are cosmetic. No edition buys gameplay, content, or early access to updates. Hytale also uses a pay-the-difference upgrade model, so you can buy Standard, play, and upgrade later for only the gap. There is no reason to spend $69.99 on day one to find out whether you like the game — buy Standard, and let the game earn the rest.
Platforms
- Windows, macOS and Linux — all three at launch, not a promised port.
- Mac is Apple Silicon only. M1 and newer. Intel Macs are not supported.
- Linux ships as a Flatpak with its own launcher that handles updates.
- Consoles are “post-launch” with no announced date. Late 2026 is optimistic, 2027 realistic. Anyone quoting a firmer date is guessing. Mobile devices have never been part of the current plan.
Hytale is not on Steam
Thousands of people search for Hytale on Steam every month. It is not there, and that is deliberate.
Hytale sells direct through its own store and launcher. There is no Steam page, no wishlist, no Steam key. Any listing claiming otherwise is not the game.
Hypixel Studios has said why, in their own words: they “don’t plan to launch on Steam until we determine our ability to comply with Steam’s policies.” That is a hold by choice, not a pending release. It is also why the Steam Deck has no official answer — the team says Hytale should work on Deck on paper, but they have not tested it and lack input mappings and small-display UI.
Hytale system requirements
Hytale is a voxel game, which means it leans on your CPU and RAM harder than most games lean on your GPU. Once your graphics card clears the minimum, more CPU and more memory do more for you than a faster card. You need a 64-bit processor and OS, and drivers supporting OpenGL 4.1.
Installation is 8 GB. A saved exploration world runs roughly 661 MB per 5000x5000 blocks and grows as you explore — budget 20 GB and stop thinking about it.
Two things the spec sheet won’t tell you
Singleplayer is the most demanding way to play Hytale. Your machine runs the client and the entire server simulation: NPCs, world generation, voxel logic. Multiplayer is lighter, because someone else’s server does that work. If Hytale runs badly for you alone, joining a server is a genuine fix, not a consolation prize.
View distance is the setting that matters. Double it and you quadruple the world being loaded and simulated around you. Orbis was designed around 384 blocks. If you are struggling, 192 is the honest floor.
Optimization is explicitly unfinished. The Hytale team expects performance to improve through Early Access.
Hytale mods: the actual story
Hytale’s modding is server-side first, and that single decision is the most interesting thing about this game.
On a modded Minecraft server, every player downloads the same mods, matches the same versions, installs the right loader, and troubleshoots the same dependency conflicts. It is a tax everyone pays forever. In Hytale, the server owns the mod experience and delivers it to you. You join. It works. You installed nothing.
The three kinds of mod
- Content Packs — structured JSON plus visual assets. Blocks, items, textures, models, sounds, defined in data files and edited in Hytale’s built-in Asset Editor. No code required.
- Plugins — compiled Java JARs talking to the Hytale Server API. Where real behaviour lives.
- Bootstrap — the low-level tier.
CurseForge is Hytale’s official mod distribution partner, and its launcher handles detection and installation for solo play.
The consequence is that the wall between playing Hytale and making things for Hytale is thinner than in any comparable game. Content Packs mean someone with the Asset Editor and no programming background can ship a working mod. User-created mods appeared within days of the Early Access release, and community-run servers are where most of the interesting work is happening.
Worth knowing: mods raise your system requirements. Large content packs, heavy server logic and long view distances all push past baseline.
Hytale multiplayer and community-run servers
Hytale multiplayer runs on community-run servers, and since Update 5 you find them without leaving the game — Server Discovery sits in the client, alongside a Social Sidebar with a friends list and Discord integration.
This is where the server-side mod model pays off. A modded Hytale server is a place you join, not a project you configure. Whatever that server runs — a custom content pack, a bespoke plugin, a scripted minigame — arrives with you. Minigames on small maps barely touch your bandwidth, and the community server scene was building custom experiences within days of release.
Bandwidth is modest and depends almost entirely on view distance: 2 Mbit/s at 192 blocks, 4.5 at 384, 6 at 480 — all worst-case. Upload is irrelevant, under 250 Kbit/s. Normal play at lower view distances is comfortable even on a 1 Mbit/s ADSL line.
The counterintuitive part: multiplayer performs better than singleplayer on the same PC, because the server does the simulation instead of your machine.
Controller support
Hytale has full native controller support, shipped in Update 5 on 27 May 2026. It was not there at Early Access launch — if you tried the game in January and gave up on the keyboard, that gap is closed.
The Steam Deck is a separate question and still unanswered. Hypixel says Hytale should run on Deck on paper, but they have not tested it, and they lack input mappings and small-display UI. Controller support is a prerequisite, not the whole job.
Hytale vs Minecraft: the honest version
Everyone asks, so here is the most useful answer available — from Minecraft’s own lead designer.
Jens Bergensten played Hytale and called it “very polished.” Then he said he would “rather just play Minecraft,” and that he would like Hytale to be “more different than Minecraft.” He framed it as an early impression, expects modding to be the deciding factor long-term, and plans to revisit.
The remarkable part is the reply. Collins-Laflamme said Bergensten is “probably right” — for now. Hytale’s own boss agrees that a full-featured Minecraft beats Hytale’s early days today, and is betting the ten-year runway on changing that.
When the two leads agree, believe them. Minecraft has fifteen years of content, an enormous ecosystem, and every friend you have already playing it. Hytale is six months into Early Access.
Where Hytale is genuinely ahead is friction. Server-side mods mean modded multiplayer costs zero setup. The Asset Editor means making things does not require learning a toolchain first. Server Discovery sits in the client, so finding somewhere to play is not a browser tab.
“Is Hytale better than Minecraft” is the wrong question. “Do I want the block game where modded multiplayer costs nothing to set up” is the right one. And Bergensten’s critique is the sharpest thing anyone has said about Hytale: it needs to be more different.
Is Hytale worth it right now?
At $19.99 with development funded to 2036, the risk is not that Hytale gets abandoned — it already survived being cancelled and came back with the rights, the team, and the engine that actually worked. The risk is that you turn up two years early to something worth turning up for.
The creation tooling already works, and the server-side mod model is a real improvement on how this genre has always done it.
- You want to build things
- You want to run a server for friends
- You would lose a weekend to the Asset Editor
The adventure half is the half still under construction, and roadmap confidence is not a build.
- You want a finished adventure game
- You want a Minecraft replacement — both leads agree it is not one yet
- You were going to buy Cursebreaker at $69.99 on day one — it is cosmetics, and the upgrade is pay-the-difference whenever you want it

Hytale, answered
Is Hytale out?
Yes. Hytale launched in Early Access on 13 January 2026 for Windows, macOS and Linux, after Riot Games cancelled it in June 2025 and Simon Collins-Laflamme reacquired the rights that November.
When did Hytale release?
Hytale released on 13 January 2026 into Early Access, on Windows, macOS and Linux at the same time. There is no announced 1.0 date.
Is Hytale on Steam?
No. Hytale sells direct through its own store and launcher. Hypixel Studios has said they do not plan to launch on Steam until they can determine their ability to comply with Steam’s policies. No Steam release has been announced.
How much does Hytale cost?
Three editions: Standard $19.99, Supporter $34.99, Cursebreaker $69.99. The differences are cosmetic only, and upgrades are pay-the-difference. There is no free version.
Which Hytale edition should I buy?
Standard. The higher editions add cosmetics, not gameplay, and you can upgrade later for the price difference.
Do I need to install mods to play on a modded Hytale server?
No. Hytale’s modding is server-side first — the server delivers mods to you automatically. Joining is all you do.
Does Hytale have multiplayer?
Yes. Hytale multiplayer runs on community-run servers, browsable from inside the client via Server Discovery since Update 5. Server-side mods mean joining a modded server requires no installation.
Does Hytale have controller support?
Yes. Full native controller support shipped in Update 5 on 27 May 2026. It was not available at Early Access launch.
Can you play Hytale on console?
Not yet. Console versions are confirmed as post-launch with no announced date.
Does Hytale run on Mac?
Yes, on Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and newer). Intel Macs are not supported.
Is Hytale finished?
No. Hytale is in Early Access, with updates every two to six weeks and pre-release patches weekly. Development is funded by a ten-year personal commitment running through 2036.
Why does Hytale run badly in singleplayer?
Singleplayer is the most demanding way to play, because your PC runs the game client and the full server simulation at once. Joining a multiplayer server moves that work elsewhere and usually performs better on the same hardware. Lowering view distance is the other big lever.
