In Kingdom Two Crowns, you can recover lost gems, your dog and kidnapped hermits after the Greed takes them. In the base game, Shogun, Dead Lands and Norse Lands, destroy the cave on the island where the theft happened. Call of Olympus lets you buy them back from the merchant beside the Donkey.
The catch is how the gems were lost. Stolen gems can be rescued, dropped gems can be collected, and stored gems can be withdrawn. Gems left in your purse when your reign ends are permanently lost in the standard campaigns.
Lost gems or a stolen companion? Start here
| Situation | Your next step |
|---|---|
| A Greedling is carrying your dog or a hermit towards a portal | Stop the carrier with your troops or a suitable mount ability before it gets through. Keep your own escape route open. |
| Gems are lying on the ground | Collect them when the route is safe. Dropped gems do not disappear with time, but Greedlings can steal them. |
| The thief escaped in the medieval campaign, Shogun, Dead Lands or Norse Lands | Record the island, unlock the bomb and destroy that island’s cave from inside. |
| The thief escaped in Call of Olympus | Find the merchant camp beside the Donkey and pay coins to recover the stolen item or companion. |
| Gems were still in your pouch when your reign ended | In the standard campaigns, these gems are permanently lost. Bombing a cave cannot recover gems that were never stolen and carried there. |
Rescue them before the Greed reaches a portal
A stolen companion is still recoverable while its carrier is fleeing. Soldiers or an attacking mount can stop the Greedling carrying the dog; killing or stunning a hermit’s carrier frees the hermit too. The portal is the important boundary. Once the carrier passes through, chasing it farther will not bring the companion back. A kidnapped hermit will not be waiting at their cottage either; you need to rescue them to use their upgrades again during that reign.
A freed hermit still needs to get home. Pay the usual 1 coin to carry them back inside your walls rather than leaving them near the portal. Your dog follows you, so retreat together. If the thief is already too far away, protect your crown and prepare the later rescue.
How to recover lost gems and companions from the cave
This route covers the medieval campaign, Shogun, Dead Lands and Norse Lands. The recovery is tied to the island where the theft happened. Losing the dog on island 2 and destroying a cave on island 4 will not rescue it.
Where to unlock the bomb in each campaign
You unlock the bomb by upgrading your town centre. First unlock the required technology on the islands below, then finish the town-centre upgrades on your rescue island. The bomb costs 18 coins beside the fully upgraded keep.
| Campaign | Unlock the technology | Buy the bomb |
|---|---|---|
| Base game: medieval | Island 2: stone mine, 10 coins → island 4: iron mine, 20 coins. | Upgrade to the iron keep, then pay 18 coins beside it. |
| Shogun | Island 2: stone mine, 10 coins → island 4: iron mine, 20 coins. | Finish the final town-centre upgrade, then pay 18 coins there. |
| Dead Lands | Island 2: stone mine, 10 coins → island 4: iron mine, 20 coins. | Finish the final iron-tier keep, then pay 18 coins there. |
| Norse Lands | Island 2: birch camp, 10 coins → island 5: pine camp, 20 coins. | Finish the highest pine-enabled town-centre tier, then pay 18 coins there. |
| Call of Olympus | No standard cave-assault bomb route. | Use the recovery merchant beside the Donkey instead. |
| Pharaoh Lands: upcoming | Bomb availability and technology islands are unconfirmed. | No verified unlock route yet. |
Pay the coin slots at the mine or camp to activate it. Stone comes before iron; birch comes before pine. Once unlocked, the technology is available on every island in that campaign, including earlier islands. You still have to pay for each settlement’s building upgrades.
The fourth island therefore unlocks iron in the base game, Shogun and Dead Lands. You can sail back to island 2 and build a bomb there if that is where your gems were stolen. In Norse Lands, make that return trip after unlocking pine on island 5.
For the base game, Shogun and Dead Lands, the last castle-keep upgrade is the tier-7 iron keep and costs 20 coins. That building payment is separate from the iron mine’s 20 coins and the bomb’s 18 coins.
Prepare the bomb and escort
- Return to the theft island with the required technology unlocked. Finish its town-centre upgrades; the bomb purchase appears beside the fully upgraded keep. You do not buy it at the forge.
- Clear the small portals between your settlement and the cliff. Prepare soldiers and builders before buying the bomb.
- Set aside 28 coins: 18 for the bomb, 5 to enter the cave and 5 to light it. Town upgrades, recruitment and equipment cost extra.
- Feed your mount before the assault. Choose one that can make the return journey; a strong attack does not guarantee enough stamina for the escape.
Escort the bomb, destroy the cave and collect the gems
Bring the bomb and its escort to the cliff, pay to enter, and advance through the cave. At the final hive, pay to light the bomb and run back to the entrance. In co-op, both rulers must enter together and be ready to escape.
Breaking the outer cliff portal alone is not enough. The rescue comes from detonating the bomb inside the cave. After you escape the explosion, look outside the destroyed entrance for the dog, hermits and gems stolen on that island. Pick up the gems and bring your companions back to safety.
Our co-op run gave us a very specific reason to learn this: the Greed took our gems and dog on island 2. We pushed on until we could build the bomb, then came back for them. A stolen companion does not mean you need to abandon the campaign.
Call of Olympus: use the merchant beside the Donkey
Olympus uses a different recovery system. Find the merchant camp on the small island where the Donkey is available. Look beside the mount for the cloaked merchant and the stolen-item display; this is not simply the normal gem-storage coffer by the wharf.
The island’s position can vary, so do not rely on advice that always places it in one map corner. The Donkey camp is the useful landmark.
Pay coins for the displayed item or companion. Recovering the dog or a kidnapped hermit costs 10 coins. When several things are available, check which one is highlighted before paying. For stolen gems, use the price shown by the recovery merchant; do not confuse it with the normal gem bank’s withdrawal fee.
Take a recovered hermit back to your settlement promptly. Buying them back at a camp does not place them safely behind your walls. See the Call of Olympus guide for the wider campaign route.
Lost gems? Check the Gem Keeper’s stone coffer
Check the ground where you dropped your gems and the Gem Keeper’s stone coffer before preparing an assault. Gems left on the ground persist across journeys and reigns unless a Greedling takes them. Banked gems stay separate from the gems in your purse.
The Gem Keeper returns gems you previously deposited. Withdrawing a stored gem costs 1 coin; shared storage lets you deposit gems on one island and collect them on another. This keeps spare gems safe during a risky journey, but it cannot retrieve gems the Greed has already carried away.
In these campaigns, gems still in your pouch when your reign ends are permanently lost, including after a failed cave escape. In co-op, one ruler losing a crown does not automatically end the reign while the other can still help.
Unopened gem chests in the forest can still supply gems as you explore the remaining islands. That is a limited campaign supply, though, rather than a refund for gems lost with your crown. Check the Gem Keeper and the theft island before spending your remaining gems on another unlock.
Can you unlock the bomb if all your gems were stolen?
Yes. Mines, logging camps, town upgrades and the bomb use coins. You can reach the required technology and prepare the rescue without recovering your gems first.
Gems unlock mounts, hermits and statues; those unlocks are separate from the technology route above. If the Greed took your remaining gems, continue towards iron on island 4, or pine on island 5 in Norse Lands, then return to the theft island. You do not need to start a new campaign to get stolen gems back.
What can your heir recover after losing the crown?
For previously unlocked hermits, the gem payment is a one-time unlock in the standard campaign recovery system. Your heir can recruit them from their original cottages without spending gems again. The dog can be released again from the fallen tree on island 2. This gives you another route after a reign has already ended; it does not restore gems lost from your pouch.
Keep your next trip safer
Carry some coins when travelling with gems. Ordinary hits knock coins out of the monarch’s purse first, then gems once the coins run out. This gives you a buffer while you retreat. It will not protect you from a crown stealer, which targets the crown directly.
Bank gems you do not need for the trip, carry hermits home after using them and avoid taking the dog past active portals just before a wave. Keep the island of each theft in mind until the rescue is complete.
