Is Aniimo pay to win? What money actually buys after launch

Is Aniimo pay to win? What Lumin Crystals, Sparkling Cubes and the paid Handbook buy, the free routes, and the one evolution you cannot earn.

The short answer: free to play, but you pay for speed and quality

Is Aniimo pay to win? For exploring, the story and catching a team, no. For collecting the best version of every creature, money buys a real head start, and one evolution line currently sits behind the paid battle pass. That is the short answer after a week with the launch build, the in-game store and the official web store.

The longer answer depends on what you mean by winning. Aniimo is a free to play game with in-game purchases, and it has no randomized banners: you catch creatures in the open world instead of pulling for them. What the game’s monetization sells is quality and speed. Two capture items guarantee a catch and set a floor for the Aniimo’s potential, the battle pass puts one branching evolution and a Perfect Prismana egg on its paid track, and the Monthly Pass mostly saves time.

This post goes through each of those, with prices, what the free route looks like, and where players and the press draw the line. The full list of what the store sells lives in our Aniimo gacha guide; here the question is only which of it changes how strong you are.

Nothing you can buy locks you out of the world, the story or the core gameplay, and you can progress through all of it without a purchase. The creatures you meet in the open world can be caught with the pods you earn by playing, and the free Prismana Pact ends up allowing players to pick a Prismana Aniimo, a rare variant with its own colours and sometimes a second element, once they reach the Junior Wayfarer rank. As a free game, the base game is complete for free-to-play players: exploring, catching, the Sanctums and Egg Heist in Team Mode are all there without spending money.

Where money starts to matter is the gap between a caught Aniimo and a good one. Potential comes in four tiers, Common, Good, Elite and Perfect, and the paid items skip the dice roll. A Sparkling Cube costs 1,500 Lumin Crystals and guarantees a Perfect, Sparkling catch, the closest thing the game has to perfect stats. An Aniipod Ultra costs 200 and guarantees at least Elite.

Monthly Pass, time rather than power

The one place where paying buys something the free track does not have is the Advanced Companion Handbook. It carries Fulmintis’s branching evolution and a Prismana Fulmintis egg with Perfect potential.

So the fair label is pay for convenience with a pay-to-win edge. How big that edge feels depends on whether you play to explore or to complete the collection.

That is the launch picture. Our bigger worry is the long run. Limited event Aniimo, one free nurture a day, scarce Vein Essence and a weekly cap on Ultras add up to a quiet, hidden gacha: nothing is behind a banner, but if you want everything, sooner or later you pay. We explain that worry in its own section below.

Two currencies: how Aniimo’s monetization works

Aniimo’s monetization runs on several currencies, but two matter for this question.

Lumin Crystals are the premium currency, and you spend real money on them. The in-game description lists one way to get them: Shop Top-Up. The Monthly Pass and the paid battle pass tracks pay some out, but those are bought with money too.

Glimmer is the free-to-play side of the monetization, earned through play. Its in-game description lists Elite Training, daily activity quests, Branches, Alphas, quests, Courses, Aniilog levels, the Holo-Battle Sim, the Handbook and chests. Glimmer has its own tab in the store, and that tab overlaps with the paid one in places.

Currency How you get it What it buys
Lumin Crystals Top-Up with real money only Sparkling Cube, Aniipod Ultra, packs, outfits
Glimmer Playing: training, quests, Alphas, Holo-Battle Sim Aniipod Ultra (10 a week), Capafruit, Psyche Fruit, name and look cards
Credits Playing Aniipod, Aniipod Pro, Aniipod Mega, growth items

On the official web store in Germany, the premium currency runs from 60 Lumin Crystals for €0.99 to 6,480 for €99.99. At the time of writing every tier is 8 per cent off with a 10 per cent bonus, and the first purchase of each tier is doubled. Outfits for your character and other cosmetics are purely cosmetic and change nothing about your team.

Sparkling Cube and Aniipod Ultra: where spending money changes a catch

These two items are the core of the question, because they change what you catch, not how fast.

The Sparkling Cube costs 1,500 Lumin Crystals in the Item tab. Its description says a catch with it always succeeds, the potential is Perfect and the Aniimo is always Sparkling. Used on a Perfect Aniimo, it also raises the chance that its Innate Potential for the recommended attributes exceeds 8. In euros, 1,500 crystals are worth roughly €19 to €27 depending on the pack you buy it with, by our own calculation from the web store prices.

The Aniipod Ultra costs 200 Lumin Crystals. It guarantees a successful catch and at least Elite potential.

Both have free routes, and they matter:

  • The Outpost vendor’s Item Exchange swaps 1,000 Sparkling Crystals for one Sparkling Cube. Sparkling Crystals drop from Elite Training, Catch Completion, Holo-Battle Sim, Sanctum clears and chests.
  • The Glimmer tab sells the Aniipod Ultra for 200 Glimmer, capped at 10 a week.
  • Elite Training, the Stamp Shop and the free Handbook track hand out both.

The difference is the rate. A free player gets a Cube every so often. Someone spending money can have one for every creature worth keeping, and that is the progress gap a free-to-play player will feel first. From a collector’s point of view, that is the real advantage.

Our own test shows why that matters. We farmed Prismana weather in Breezy Plains, where the Prismana version of a species spawns more often. The Prismana we caught came out at Good potential. Prismana weather brings the form, not the quality. If you want that Prismana at Elite or Perfect, you need an Ultra or a Cube in hand when it spawns, or you roll the dice.

The Companion Handbook: a battle pass with one real paywall

The Companion Handbook is the game’s battle pass. It has three tracks: the free Standard Edition, the Advanced Companion Handbook for €9.99 and the Collector’s edition for €22.99, called Keepsakes in the game. The current season runs until late October, as expected from a live service game.

Most of the paid track is more of what the free track gives: Sparkling Cubes, Glimmer, Lumin Crystals and training materials. Two rewards are different.

The first is the Soul of Electric Shock. Its description says it unlocks Fulmintis’s branching evolution and is available from the Advanced Companion Handbook. That is its only listed source. We found no free route, which makes it the one way to evolve a creature in the launch build that we saw behind a payment.

The second is a Prismana Fulmintis egg on the advanced track at level 20. It hatches a Prismana Fulmintis with a Perfect potential rating. Anyone can still meet Prismana creatures in the wild and in the Prismana Pact, but not this one, and not with a guaranteed Perfect.

The Collector’s tier adds ten levels, extra Aniimo storage, Phenomena Crystals for ascending high-tier Aniimo, and Radiant Dreamshadow, an item that changes an Aniimo’s look. A Buy Level button is there too, allowing players to purchase their way past battle pass progression outright.

If you want a single sentence on Aniimo pay to win, this is where it lives: one creature’s evolution and one Perfect Prismana are sold, not earned.

Monthly Pass and packs: time, not power

The Monthly Pass costs €5.99 on the web store. In the game it doubles the Primegy cap and cuts two hours off egg hatching. It pays 330 Lumin Crystals at once and 3,000 Glimmer plus 6,000 Companion EXP over 30 days.

None of that is exclusive. Primegy, a capped resource, can also be bought with Glimmer, 60 for 50. The hatching bonus saves waiting, not eggs. The Glimmer adds up to about 15 Aniipod Ultras over a month, which is a real boost to catch quality for a small price.

The Pack tab sells limited season bundles for Lumin Crystals: a Departure Gift at 280, a Champion’s Gift at 980, an Adventure Pack at 1,680, Weekly Nurturing at 1,980 and Season Keepsakes at 2,980. Season Keepsakes includes a Prismana Orb, which toggles a Breezy Plains Aniimo whose Prismana form you have already unlocked into that version. Weekly offers run from 60 to 680.

Packs bundle Cubes, Ultras, Capafruit and materials for the game. They compress weeks of progression into one purchase, but they do not contain anything the rest of the game never gives out, as far as the launch build shows. There are no loot boxes for creatures on sale; the closest thing is the Mystery Egg Box, which opens into one of three Perfect REGEN eggs at random.

PvP: where pay to win would hurt, and how the game handles it

In any game, pay to win only really bites where you play against other people. In this game that is the multiplayer PvP side of Egg Heist, where up to six teams compete on one map.

For Egg Heist, the developers’ own guide says each Pathfinder’s Aniimo stats are balanced in PvP. If that holds, a Perfect Sparkling Aniimo does not beat an Elite one on raw numbers there. What more money can still buy is breadth: more Aniimo trained to a usable level, faster.

Mein-MMO sees it harder and calls competitive play a direct advantage for spenders. At this point, that is a prediction more than a measurement. We have not played Egg Heist PvP ourselves, and with stats balanced there, we would not go that far yet. The honest reading is that PvP is where the question will be settled, and it is not settled a week after launch.

The long-term worry: a hidden gacha

Aniimo has no banners, and that holds. But look at what limits a collector, and several small caps line up in the same direction.

  • Nurturing. Prismana forms come from nurturing a region’s Bloom. You get one free nurture a day; every further one costs a Vein Essence, and in our play Vein Essence is the scarce part.
  • Catch quality. A guaranteed Perfect catch needs a Sparkling Cube: 1,500 Lumin Crystals in the shop, or 1,000 Sparkling Crystals the slow way. Aniipod Ultras for Glimmer stop at 10 a week.
  • Time windows. The launch calendar already puts Aniimo on the clock: Aniimo Discovery: Dazmand from 25 September to 8 October, a Prismana Glynsera UP week from 21 to 27 September, then weeks for Melloblum, Waleetle and Inferlupa. A rate-up week is a banner by another name.

Put together, that is the pull of a gacha without the pull screen. Event Aniimo are the sharpest part: if one is only around for a limited time and you miss it, you may not get it at all, and if you want it at Perfect, you need a Cube in hand when it shows up. Free players can keep up with part of this. Keeping up with all of it is where the wallet comes in.

None of this is pay to win in the strict sense today, and it may never be. It is a structure that makes a full collection expensive, and it can tighten with every season. It is the part we will keep checking as new events land.

What players, the community and the press are saying

The mood at launch was sceptical. The game opened to Mixed reviews on Steam, and GamesRadar quoted reviews calling it very much a gacha game and complaining about paid rare items and end-game Aniimo.

Mein-MMO went through the game’s store the day after launch and landed on a line that sums up much of the debate: “clearly Pay2Win at this point, but not Pay2Play.”

On Steam’s own discussion board, a thread from before launch asking the community to rate the pay to win on a scale from 1 to 100 got answers from 0 to 90. The low end argues there is nothing to win in a game without ranked competition. The high end expects the monetization to grow over the coming seasons. Comparisons with Genshin Impact and other games in the genre came up early, mostly about the many currencies and the monthly card.

Some of the worry dates from the closed beta. In the beta, catching a Legendary depended on luck and repeated throws, which players read as gacha monetization. The developers at Pawprint Studio say in their dev letter from 3 September that this beta system is gone: you now collect Legendary tokens through exploration and the story and craft your own Legendary Aniipod.

Our view sits in the middle. The store is louder than the game needs, and there are a lot of currencies. But the core loop is catchable, the free routes for Cubes and Ultras exist, and the real paywall is narrow.

Who Aniimo is pay to win for

It depends on how you play.

Fine without spending money
  • you play for the world, the story and the creatures you discover, and you find their different play styles fun
  • you are happy with Good and Elite Aniimo, and use your free Cubes on favourites
  • you play Egg Heist in Team Mode with friends, which is fun without any purchase
The game will pull at your wallet
  • you want every Aniimo at Elite or Perfect, and every Prismana form
  • you want Fulmintis’s branching evolution this season
  • you want to compete in Egg Heist PvP with a deep bench
  • you want every event Aniimo while it is live, at its best potential

For most players, the pass is the only purchase with good value, and even that is optional. The Advanced Handbook is the one to decide on if Fulmintis matters to you.

FAQ

Is Aniimo pay to win?

Partly. You can explore, finish the story and catch a full team without paying. Money buys guaranteed Perfect catches through Sparkling Cubes and one evolution, Fulmintis’s branch, through the paid battle pass. In PvP Egg Heist, Pawprint Studio says Aniimo stats are balanced, which limits the advantage. It is pay for convenience with a narrow pay-to-win core.

How is Aniimo monetized?

Aniimo is free to play and sells Lumin Crystals, the premium currency, from €0.99 to €99.99. On top come a Monthly Pass for €5.99 and two paid battle pass tracks at €9.99 and €22.99, plus limited packs and cosmetics. There are no randomized banners for creatures. The store sells capture items, materials, cosmetics and time savers.

Does Aniimo have microtransactions?

Yes. The in-game store has tabs for the Monthly Pass, packs, outfits, items and a top-up page, and the official web store sells crystals and passes directly. Most microtransactions buy speed or cosmetics. The ones that touch power are the Sparkling Cube, the Aniipod Ultra and the rewards on the paid battle pass track.

Is Aniimo a traditional gacha game?

No. Among monster catching games it sits closer to Pokemon than to a traditional gacha game: you catch Aniimo in the world instead of pulling them from paid banners. Randomness sits in the game itself, in potential rolls and spawns, and in a few reward boxes such as the Mystery Egg Box. The economy still borrows from gacha games: many currencies, a battle pass and a monthly card.

Can you get Sparkling Cubes for free in Aniimo?

Yes. The Outpost vendor’s Item Exchange trades 1,000 Sparkling Crystals for one Sparkling Cube, and Cubes also come from Elite Training, the Stamp Shop and the Handbook. The store sells them for 1,500 Lumin Crystals. Free players get fewer of them, so save them for the Aniimo you really want at Perfect.

Is the Aniimo Monthly Pass worth it?

For regular players, it is the best value you can buy. For €5.99 you get 330 Lumin Crystals at once, 3,000 Glimmer over 30 days, which buys about 15 Aniipod Ultras, and two hours off every egg. It does not unlock anything exclusive, so you lose no content by skipping it, only speed.

Can you play Aniimo without spending money?

Yes. The world, the story, Sanctums, Egg Heist Team Mode and the Holo-Battle Sim are all open to free players, and the Prismana Pact gives everyone a rare Prismana at the Junior Wayfarer rank. What you give up is speed and the Fulmintis branch from the paid Handbook. Completionists will feel the grind most.
